so as most of you know, a guy at work is selling his 01 suzuki sv650s. from the responses most of you gave, that sounds like a killer deal. john and gerald have so graciously gnawed away at my will to resist joining the 2 wheeled dark side for quite some time and it looks like this opportunity is too good to pass up. i think chan is declining to buy the bike as its just too soon, so am like 90% sure i am going to buy it.
so since i know next to nothing about motorcycles except that i want one, lets hear what the pros and cons would be of having this SV650S as a starter bike. initially, it would probably be kept for sunny days or some weekend riding. if i dont like it, i may sell it. i'm not even trying to think of taking it on track... yet. i'm busy enough with the car on track and i have no experience riding on the street with a motorcycle, so lemme take care of that first before i blast off into doing track days. that other thread that chan posted has kinda focused itself on track days. my main concern is the balance between having a fun bike and my personal safety on the road.
so those of you not in monterey ca right now, have at it and lets hear the comments. i'm sure the others will chime in after they get back from the westsiiiiiiiide

Pros:
-Low end torque... makes learning to start and stop easier
-Easy to turn at low speeds... which is good for beginers
-generally tons of parts avialable when you drop it
-well balanced bike with good brakes for street riding
-generally pretty good on gas
Cons:
-the 650s doesnt have the "power" if you have to get out of the way... which produces a "pro" ... you have to ride defensive on the highway and really pay attention... your best get away will be your brakes... and thats not always the safest way.
-you have to take a crap ton of stuff off the bike to get to the battery
-i beleive a 2001 is carbed
-tons of people have them... its like a club... it makes me sick...

thats about it. really they are good beginer bikes... and they handle the track really well. all in all SV650s are GREAT beginer bikes... for the street... and then they make a good transition into a good track bike. well in my opinion.

i think it'll have plenty, especially for your first bike. Not to mention the fun factor of getting a v-twin! aka street-usable torque (something i don't have :x )
i know that the 2001 gixxer was the first to have FI, so Suzuki could've put it on the SV as well. I'm not sure if it has FI or if it's carb'd. I'd much rather perfer FI, but having carbs for a first bike isn't a bad idea, you'll have a little more throttle lag.
there is really no con. kaan says lack of power? give me a break. yeah, i suppose if high 11s quarter miles are slow to you...

Pros? It's a great bike. For the street it's good to go. For the track, it's pretty much good to go. If you get real fast real quick, put on a GSX-R front end and a Penske/Ohlins rear and you're good to go.
Cons? It's an S, so it's not as comfortable the non-S model.
It's a great bike. If you want a non-S, I know a guy selling an '02 or '03, can't remember the year. He's the only owner, and I can tell you it hasn't been wheelie'd which is important for an SV (it's a twin, if you wheelie too often the front cylinder can't get oil and dries out). And the break-in period was fully performed as required by Suzuki (I can attest to the first ~100 miles because I'm the one that put them on there driving it from a dealership up here back to Harrisonburg).
And it's got ample power, especially for a starter. If you're complaining about power, then you probably need to downshift.

and scotty, i dont ride bicycles much anymore. before i turned 16, you'd be hard pressed to find me not on a bike. i loved to ride everywhere and would spend all day everyday biking somewhere around town or on some trails in the woods. in the past 10 years though, it hasnt really been something i've done much even though i tell myself every year to go buy a decent mountain bike cuz charlottesville has so many trails.

i dont feel like reading all the posts above this one, so if someone said this already i apologize...
the sv is a very torquey bike due to its v-twin engine. i think its bad news bears for a starter bike. if you start off too heavy on the throttle, that mother fucker is going to pop out from under your nads and land on some car's windshield.

ok picture this... you are roll'n down 81... 29... 95... any major highway. for some reason a tractor trailer is next to you... they merged on... it is going fast enough to pass you... you are going fast enough to pass it... and for whatever reason you are located right around the trailor hitch area but in your lane... when he decides to come over.... you have two options...
brake the 53ft OR accelerate the 15 feet.... all to get out of the way of the tractor trailer.
and SV650 couldnt get out of its own way if that happens... at least not like other bikes... if forces you to be much more defensive when you have a bike with low power. its bascially a 65hp/55ftlbs bike... when other older and newer 600 inline 4s have about 80hp/50ftlbs... you cant crap the whip on a 650... now... Steves SV1000.... i'm sure WILL get out of the way... lol... but thats not what we are talking about.
trust me... this happend to my friend and i as WE got onto the highway... the truck was in the lane to our left... he came over on us, ever though we were both accelerating past it... he had to go on the shoulder to make sure he didnt get run over... and i just blasted down the middle of the lane to get in front of the guy. he didnt even stop, hesitate, nothing... we had to get out of his way...

as a beginner rider i would try to avoid those kinds of situations. there will always be a danger that's unexpected on a motorcycle and sometimes it is better to have a higher horsepower bike. I think the SV is plenty capable for a beginner bike and if i were starting out i would just ride the local streets when the traffic is light during the daylight hours. Progressively introducing yourself to the night riding atmosphere, traffic, and roads where you travel faster. ItÔÇÖs just common sense to me to build your confidence riding when you start out. I think the SV650/s is a great beginner bike, you just have to respect the power (ie: initial low-end torque) the throttle yields. ItÔÇÖs still a great beginner bike IMO.
Sounds to me like your friend was scared to twsiting the throttle as far as necessary Kaan. I've had no issue with failure to accelerate and I'm likely the heaviest guy on this forum.
Amusing that some people say it's got too much power/torque and others say not enough.
That must mean it's just right.

There's an easy solution and one I've done since day one, if i'm in traffic, I roll atleast one gear lower than usual. so if I have to crack the throttle the bike moves. The only time I'm ever in 6th is when traffic is light. The fuel savings between 1500RPM isn't worth the even more significant decrease in available power.
Plus your friend always had the option to downshift the minute he noticed something was awry, instead of just holding onto to the throttle and saying "come on! go! go!" Clicking down one or two and cracking the throttle is much faster than lugging 6th gear.
