So, after this summer, my parents are moving to Europe for the next several years atleast, and I'm trying to get my dad to buy a sports car to take full advantage of the location. I got it in his head a few weeks ago, and all of a sudden a few days later he says "you know, I could buy a Miata". Progress indeed.
I then proceeded to try and convince him to sell our house and buy a C6 Z06 but I think that backfired and now he's been put off the idea. I've settled (ha) on an S2000 for him, and I'm going to try and get him to test drive one. I'm hoping some seat time will sell him on it.
He drives a 2000 Toyota Avalon. Its a slow, boring, utensil of a car. Short of annoying the hell out him, what else can I say or do?

Get him to test drive it if you think he will like it, but otherwise, don't bother him. It's his car, not yours, let him drive what he wants to.

You might be able to convince him to go halfway, something sporty but not a full on 2 seater. Europe has plenty of good cars to choose from in that category from the CTR to the 130i to TVR's.

Why? So you can drive it sometimes?
If he wants a sports car, he'll buy a sports car. If not, he wont. If someone is not into cars at all they wont generate any additional satisfaction of driving a Z06 over a Merc c-class, especially given the significant price difference.

Yeah but I'd say you could probably convince him to go halfway more easily. Definitely get him out to drive some stuff. I think you might have a hard time convincing him to get a true sportscar if he's not into that sort of thing because there are several rather large inconveniences with them. But if he's cool with the idea of a Miata you have something to work with. At any rate I'd recommend one of the fun euro sedans or hatchbacks if he resists too much on the sports car.

get him to test drive it. if possible, get him to park it in his driveway, and encourage him to look ou the window at the pretty car in his driveway. that should do it.

I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't want to drive it and tear up some country roads, but more importantly I'd like to do it with him. When I was a kid he had a Harley 883 motorcycle and we'd ride together on trips, probably the best memories I've ever had. He drove a 68 Mustang GT in high school, always comments on nice cars we see, and says I'd like to have this and that. I guess I could say I know he wants one, i'm just trying to get him over the edge.
I did look at some "halfway" cars as some of you mentioned, maybe I can sway him on one of those...he remarked he might like to get a hatchback, so I suggested the Astra VXR...240hp turbo
Thanks for the advice!

yeah man, why would you even sugest a damn Chevy when he's living in the land of much better choices! Even an S2k.... bah! It'd be like working at Apple and buying a PC. Hell, he could get an Arial Atom! hock: Exige? Or yeah, hell a TVR! Where in "europe" are they moving? Isn't the radical street legal in the UK?

Jess, also laughing at the idea of getting a Z06 said "it's like going to the finest seafood restaurant and getting the pizza". Jeez!
And yeah man, for a more sensible but fun choice, what about the C220 CDI? 250ftlbs of torque in a functional and great looking hatch, 6-spd, gets 44 MPG, that'd be my daily driver if I was over there fo sho. And getting it worked on would be like getting a Cavalier or a Camry worked on here.

Haha, good point. Well hes keeping the Avalon, which would take care of daily duties, I'm just trying to get him to buy a fun weekend car. Maybe a really cheap used Miata....when you can pick one up for 3k, theres really no excuse not to!
he's going to ship the Avalon over there? Either I'm confused or that's more economical that I imagine it would be.

Its been shipped courtesy of the US taxpayer  We've had it in Europe before, its fine but a little too big. All the more reason to get a little sports car
oh. good. :?
So where in europe? Are we allowed to know?

They're moving to Paris, we lived in Belgium before. Cars are so much more expensive in Europe too, for instance the Z06 in the states starts at 65k, in Europe its 100+!! Thats why most gov. employees take their cars with them, they're perfectly legal.
yeah, I'd think that Avalon would be a liability in Paris, that thing's a tank over there! He needs a:

I think we are haha. Yeah every corner of that car has a scratch on it cause its so damn big. But for being a 6 year old DD it somehow has less than 40k on it (I guess since we don't drive it during summers) so it doesn't make much sense to sell it.
Maybe a vespa??
