cool suits

for those of us that arent dropping all sorts of bling on cool shirts with coolers full of ice water and pumps and whatnot, is there anything that you're using to battle the heat while inside the car? i was thinking of just using a camelback full of ice water and just putting it on my chest instead of my back while in the car. with july and august events almost here, proper hydration and comfort while on track is going to be very important, and i'd like a cheaper alternative to dedicated coolshirts.

uhhh i just stay hydrated... a 25 minute session on track in regular clothes is nothing.

Really though, the cool shirt system isn't that much $$$ if you think about it, and it really does work, quite well. With a gutted interior and a 3 layer nomex race suite on I start swetting before I even crank the car, flip the switch on the cooler and it feels soooooo nice!! Just make sure you have already gone to the bathroom, nothing worse that sitting on grid, flip the switch, have all that cool water running around your chest and then it reminds you to take care of business.

I was thinking about getting one of those camel packs, zip tying it to the roll cage and filling it w/ gatorade, that way I could have some to sip on while on the straights .

Also, you can setup some duct work to direct air at your body from the outside. Combine that with some NACA duct work and maybe a little fan, brake cooling duct fans work great here, I have one just need to get some hose for it.

put on a nomex suit that doesnt breathe and is thicker than wool, gut your car so it turns into a greenhouse and all that engine heat goes straight to the cockpit and race for 30 minutes. Then come talk to me you big pussy.

Icevest, and hang the camelbak off of your rollbar if you need to.

I dont have any problems with the heat really... if you do, you arent staying hydrated. And that doesnt mean just drink some water the morning you show up at the track. It doesnt get any better than that for doing track days in the summer.

I was actually going to do that, but I waited too long to buy the donjoy unit. Definately the best time to buy those is in the winter.
Now my car is overweight so I dont want to strap 20 pounds or so in the car anyway, and I was surprised how the race at CMP wasnt as bad as I thought it would be.

Why would you say that? I'm not an expert on miata side windows but how big are they? If they are just little small 1/4 windows it really wouldn't be all that hard. Remove the glass, trace the outline on the plexi, cut it out, lay the NACA duct on the plexi, trace, cut and bolt. It isn't rocket science. You could have them done for about $25, and this thread is all about being cheap!

I agree with you 99% of the time, (just ask RJ about my "projects")
but the naca windows alone are $25 each, and pegasus isnt cheap on the shipping either. (ART has never charged me shipping but YMMV)
Im not sure how much a sheet of lexan is, but probably at least $10?
Plus cutting and riveting tools if you dont already have them.
You may save a bit, but it seems to me like mostly a wash.
