Joey Hand's Flip at Mid Ohio
#1
Don't know how many of you were watching the Rolex at Mid Ohio today, but this one made my hairs stand on end.

This makes 2 BIG crashes at MidOhio this year, this and the Aston, I'm really rethinking Nationals now...

If you want to post this on other boards please wait until I post a GoogleVideo link, it is being 'verified'

Holy crap we saw it, that is easily one of the wildest crashes I've seen in awhile. Yeah this makes me a little apprehensive about Mid-O too, definitely can't hang it out there in some places...

They didn't say much, he crawled out of the car and sat down next to a big pile of gas, then they moved him and took him to the hospital, they said he was ok, but I haven't heard anything else.

I found this on the net,

Quote:Hand was awake and alert following the incident and was transported to nearby MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital. The driver never lost consciousness and underwent a series of tests, but did not complain of any injuries. Precautionary x-rays were negative, while results of a CAT-scan were still pending. Hand remained hospitalized as of 11:15 p.m. ET. Edwards was able to continue on course following the incident and was not injured.

I don't see why it'd really make anybody think twice about Mid-Ohio... any track can be dangerous, just like whenever you get into a car on the street. Just my opinion.

If the safety stewards didn't see a MOUND of dirt just to the right of the end of a fast straight then what else may they have forgotten.

Don't forget this is the first year of a newly repaved track at MidO. Who knows what problems are going to crop up on it.

...coming from somebody who has never driven it. Every post on here has been apples to oranges. Where the Aston went off had nothing to do with the new track profile, it has ALWAYS been that way. OK, the BMW launched off a clump of dirt, Confusedhrug:, how is that any different from launching off a curb? And the new surface is still a bit slick for the 2-wheelers and they had a few spills... yet tons of racers (cars) love the new pavement since it's so smooth. Having driven Mid-Ohio for three years in a row prior to the resurfacing, I can tell you that the prior surface was a bit hairy due to the sealant - especially trecherous in the wet.

I just don't see how you can seriously question racing on this track when others are equally or much more dangerous. Have you ever noticed the storm drain at the first turn into the high-speed esses at VIR? What about at the end of the back straight there... what if you lose your brakes and launch off the top of the roller coaster? And Summit, where deer is the number one cause of death? This list is endless...

So my final word is that any track is infallible, nothing is perfect. So stop bitching, go out drive, and have fun.

I'm not trying to be a douchebag, but I was astonished at how closed-door you were about it.

I can assure you though, go drive Mid-Ohio, and you will see why so many people who race it put it at the top of their favorites list.

I plan to, however, I was stating that I was rethinking going to MID-O, for NATIONALS. With everything that has gone one since the repavement combined with a bunch of hot headed NASA racers from all over the country I am just reconsidering that being my first time at this track. I don't see how my comment about rethinking nationals implied that I would NEVER goto mido.

If you think Mid-O is bad, go spend some time at Road Atlanta Wink

What some of the AMA guys were saying was that because the new surface makes the track faster, it also makes it a bit more dangerous in a way, because now you're going faster in places that didn't have enough runoff room in the first place.

Still, I don't think Mid-O is more dangerous than SP at this point.

holy fuck thats outrageous

say what you want about the saftey of the track, but any track that leaves huge mounds of dirt within proximity to the racing surface has their heads well up their ass

For what that car went through... it looked like the car held together nicely.
