i have a car that has sat for about a year. I was wondering if the fuel in it needs an additive or some more fuel to stir it up or what. Any advice?

Try to start. If it doesn't start, the gas has gone bad. The year old gas in every part of your fuel system so there's no harm in trying to crank. Hold off on putting in more gas until you've confirmed quality. FYI old fuel smells absoultely horrendous.

I'd put some drygass in it. You can get it at Advance Auto. Then, turn the key on and off a few times so that you prime the pump enough to get some of the new fuel through the system.

Try cranking it, if that doesnt work, spray some eather(sp?) down in the carb - or a capful of gas either one.

maybe, the carbs only have 3k miles on them, maybe allright?

karioth Wrote:maybe, the carbs only have 3k miles on them Doesnt matter if they have 3 miles on them... when gas sits, it turns into varnish and sludge in the fload bowls and jets. You might be able to get away with not dissaembling them, but who knows.

id clean the carbs, put a some sta-bil, dry gas (or gas antifreeze), and fuel injector cleaner in it, then fire it up.
i bought a miata that had been sitting for 2 years or so, and the gas drained out and looked just fine.

picked up the car yesterday. Dropped some fresh gas (it had about half a tank in it already) and some drygas. It runs as well as it did last time i drove it. Still need to adjust those carbs though. Actually what I think is going on is the clutch air plate (the thing over two of the barrels that looks like a throttle body gate). Is not moving with the throttle cable (when i pull the throttle cable this gate does not move). Is this normal or probably the problem?

The carb was rebuilt only because a tiny plastic piece had a crack in it from being 30+ years old. It didn't idle after that first time we drove it, but I was impressed for all those years of setting.

hehe. THe problem with it is its running too rich, to the point where it is hurting performance. It's a Holley carb (not Eidelbrock as I thought originally) and it looks like the gate over the secondaries is for vaccuum not to draw air in. I jammed a stopwatch (!) in there to keep the gate open and it ran 10x better. This is obviously a very ghetto and temprary solution. Engine and exhaust sound BAD-ASS though, I had at two mustangs try to race me over the weekend hehe. Funny part is, one of the stangs was full of menonites.
I dont know if this IS the carb on it but it is the same configuartion from what I can see: http://www.holley.com/0-1850S.asp

I think it is probably grounds to lock yourself in a room for a long period of time if a group of menonites race you and win

What kind of car is it? Holley's notoriously run rich all the time anyway. Is it a vacuum advance for sure? A lot of them are mechanical.

its a 77 vette with an LT1 motor with some work done to it, will get the details later, its supposed to be good for around 400HP. But yea its a Holley carb and its running waaaaay to rich, the secondarie's vaccuum plate seems to be sprung shut (making it fuel full blast at idle, shutting it off).
