Might be My First Real Car!!
#1
Hey, I don't have the car yet, but it's pretty much finalized, I just need to go pick the car up. I am stoked b/c this will be my first performace/sports car that would actually have some balls on the autox track. The guy used the car for autox, and that's exactly what I would use it for. The car def has some paint issues, but I am fine w/ that sonsidering it is a 20+ year old car. Tell me what you guys think! The mods/description/pics are as followed:

1985 Mazda Rx-7 Gs

*12,000 milage engine w/ 1/2 bridgeport (12a) (Japanese spec rotor housing with oil injection)
*140k on Chassi
*Full Racing beat exhaust
*Light weight flywheel Heavy duty pp/ ferodo clutch disk
*Racing beat intake system and modified holley
*Triple core radiator (New)
*Electric radiator fan
*Brand new MSD wires
*Adjustable front tokico struts and Racing Beat springs all around
*Aftermarket sway bay (front)
*Strut brace
*Short shifter
*4 brand new Falken Azines RS's. (14 inch limited rims)
*Front air dam (Pacific) and lights
*Aftermarket steering wheel
*Aftermarket fuel pump
*Large front mount oil cooler from earlier year car

hey thanks guys! The Guy only wants $1800 for it. He started at 3k and no one was bitting, mainly b/c the owner didn't post pics up of the car/didn't have any pics. My brother saw the car on the rx7forum and told me about it. So from talking to the owner, the car sounded like a perfect little autox car. Ya the owner said the interior is in great shape considering the year and amount of miles are on the car. I think I got a steel on this car, considering the car has at least $1800 of parts alone on it.

You can't go wrong if that motor really has that many miles on it. Have you had a compression test done and otherwise checked the health of the car yet?

No, I haven't seen the car in person yet, so ya you're right pictures and seeing the car in person are two completely diff things owner says the car is, it is, I am pretty confident from talking to him. Hopefully what the My brother actually just bought a mazda rotary compression tester, so i'll def be able to check that Smile.

Looks like a great find. Good price if its in the condition that is shown/stated above. You'll have to keep us updated when you get to see it first hand.

i dont quite know how to do a compression test on a rotary, but i remember a few posts here on the MM forum a while back saying that it was a different process. might wanna find out if thats true

compression test on a rotary isnt that hard - put the tester in the trailing plug hole (the one on the bottom - there's 2 plugs per rotor) and hole the valve open and watch it peak cyl pressure with each compression stroke. What you're looking for is large variances in compression - i.e. 105, 105, 60, 105, 105, 60 - that would indicate a busted apex seal. Anything over 100 on those 12a's is good, and they're pretty indestructable. Sometimes the apex seals, or coolant/oil o-rings inside go, but fairly rare. Whatever you do dont ever overheat it, not even for a half second. If the temp gauge is on the run to the red, shut it down.

Good luck - I used to have an '83 GSL, its one of the banners on top Smile

All good info, but a broken apex seal will yield low compression on two rotor faces, so you'd be looking at something more along the lines of 105, 60, 60.

Thanks guys! Ya the oil is really easy to change in those cars, engine bay is very open, not too much in them. RJ, ya my brother was just messing w/ you, you def know what you're talking about. Lol as he was posting that 105 60 60 thing, he was like wait is that right?! Big Grin

My WRX was a bitch to change the oil in ! You had to take the rock guard underneath completely off before you could get to the oil pan plug.

Yea that plastic guard is a bit annoying.. but after getting used to it just takes a few minutes to pop off and change the oil. Trying to mount that thing back up by yourself is a little more tricky but not overly hindering. Its just part of the process at this point. :?

Same way with my SVX, except you had to take the skidplate off for the plug AND the filter.

It sucked.

Oil spills on the subframe when you loosen the filter on the BMW
