Dear Virginia NMA Member,
Delegate David Albo has found a way to make more money from your traffic ticket. He has introduced a bill, which has passed the House of Delegates, that would charge you annual fees dependant on the amount of points on your license.
The purpose of HB 314 is to "generate revenue from drivers whose proven dangerous driving behavior places significant financial burdens upon the Commonwealth."
The reality is that this is not geared towards dangerous drivers. This is a ploy to get more money from you. If you have four or more points on your license, you will be fined $100. If you have more than four points, you will be fined an additional $75 per point.
This is assessed annually. If you donÔÇÖt pay these fines within 60 days, your license will be revoked.
To rub salt into the wound, if you have a reckless driving ticket on your license within the last three years, you will pay an additional $350. Reckless driving could be as simply as failure to observe lanes marked for traffic.
If this bill passes, you can bet that issuing tickets like reckless driving and speeding will have even more emphasis than now.
Please take the time to contact your Senator and ask that they vote "NO" to H.B. 314. This is not about safety. This is about the state making more revenue from tickets.

wow, that is absolutely ridiculous...fine+insurance hike+plus additional fines for revenue building? wtf mate
I wonder if higher costs related to tickets will eventually blow up in the face of those trying to levy them? At some point, if the cost is high enough, more and more people will be bringing lawyers, more will fight harder, more will challenge the "truth" brought foward by the cops and appeal cases that have questionable proof, more will do nefarious things to avoid tickets. The days of the traffic court that just denies everyone their rights to a fair trial and assumes you're guilty until proven innocent will dissapear as the people have more to lose. And is that what the state really wants to accomplish?

Yup, its crazy. That means a reckless driving ticket will cost you well over 1,000 dollars just in fee's, not counting the ticket itself, insurance, and court fees. Blingmw, I think by them charging it over a few years they hope to not have the problem of people fighting it. You should fight every ticket you get.

you try "obeying the traffic laws" on I95. you'll be as flat as a pancake  or how about the law where you're not ever allowed to coast in neutral or with the clutch disengaged? i break that one every day and i know someone who was charged with it. should he have to pay a yearly fine for that? i don't think so.

the bill is being proposed to drum up support from old folks and soccer moms. Thats where it will end, its not going anywhere and it wont be passed.

It'll also help elicit support from organizations on both sides of the fence. He'll get support from traffic safety groups for such "people happy" kind of bill and he'll get support from organizations such as the [NMA?] when they send a representative to him and he graciously agrees to reconsider his terms... afterwards the NMA sees him as an intelligent individual able to correct his own mistakes and everybody else sees him as a community-oriented, caring gentleman. But, like Evan said, it won't go anywhere.

If you didnt notice in that email, it has already passed the house!!! It's already halfway to being a law. Please, call your senators (just click on that link to find out their number) and tell them to vote no.

If traffic "safety" laws were actually about safety and not about revenue, you might have a point. But the way the laws are today its impossible to drive down the street without breaking one, and I would be willing to bet 99.9% of driver break some law in some way everytime they drive.

A good friend of mine who's a police officer once told me. "Matt the way the traffic laws are written, I could pull over any driver I wanted after 2 minutes of following them." It sucks, but as long as you're not being an idiot you shouldn't have too many problems. I remember when I had to go to the driver improvement course, they showed us a video and asked us to count the # of infractions in the 30 second clip. Most of us got like 5 or so, turns out there were more like 15.
