MSD ignitions anyone?

Any of you ever had a MSD ignition system? I have a HEI system from the factory, computer controlled carb. Was looking at putting a kit on that comes with a coil, MSD 6AL control box, etc etc.....didnt know what kind o results to expect.

I was looking at the MSD 6AL for the Daytona. Mopar offers it...an MSD box with a mopar sticker. I did a little research and found out that for my 4 banger turbo car it would do almost nothing. It has the rev limiter and all. I dunno. Noting too great for my app...but I dunno a damn thing about a Chevy.

A lot of the MSD ignitions allow a stutterbox launch. Also most ignition systems on modern cars are more than adequate and below 400 horsepower, most ignitions systems just need a slight tune-up with better wires, plugs, and a coil. However, if your particular car has a slightly weaker system than most do, then I Say go for it. I am not even messing with a system like that until/if I upgrade turbos from my already upgraded turbo.

Well, it's a 20 year old HEI system...Im running 8mm wires, but thats about all ive done for it...probably time for a change. I agree about running a better tuned engine..I cant wait until the tracks open up..I've decided that's way cheaper than trying to buy dyno time to tune and more real world too. I am running a little bit rich right now, which has been a problem for a while (if you recall the scenic drive). Running a better ignition system will effectively lean it out just a little bit, but I still need to buy a set of jets and swap them in and out until I find the best size

given the age of your stock system i would think this wouldn't be a half bad replacement (not upgrade). for a japanese four-banger they are pretty much worthless until you turn up the power A LOT.

Only reason to use them on a honda is for high HP apps, and to keep engine heat off the ignition coil - lots of heat will kill the stock coil in the dizzy.

I Say do it, not for a lot of gain, but definitely it will bring BACK horsepower that youve probably lost over the years and maybe give you a few extra, plus your car will run cleaner with a better spark.

Well, the engine is brand new, so i'm really going for a little cleaner combustion, and maybe a small gain in mileage. The electrical system is the only thing left on the car that's old at this point.

Go for it,especially with higher RPM performance,it will only help. The HEI system is great,but it tends to break up and work like crap above 4,000 rpm. I'd ditch the Feedback Carb while i'm at it too. I'd also read "How to Build High Performance Ignition Systems" by Todd Ryden. The author is an employee of MSD and the book is written great. He suggests adding an aftermarket ignition module and coil to the HEI,and make sure you have a solid 12-14 volts going to the coil through at least 14 gauge wire.

The MSD 8500 Super HEI kit. but probably gonna go for the 6AL module. Also going to get the corresponding cap/rotor kit for the distrib. Already have 8mm wires
