It's time for new brakes!
#1
Took my car in for an oil change to a friend of mine who is my mechanic and he noticed that my rotors are really worn and my pads are almost shot.

I figure this is a good excuse to go ahead and upgrade to slotted rotors, swap out the lines for SS ones, and get some good street pads that have good stopping power in the cold, wet, and hot.

Any suggestions? What have you guys liked in the past? Realize I'm not looking for a track pad, nor something that makes a lot of noise. Minimal brake dust is always a plus, but it doesn't bother me a whole lot considering this car will probably always have either black or gunmetal rims.

I've also heard good things about the bobcats, good call. Slotted rotors do look so cool tho ! =p Not what you typically see on an STI.

Buybrakes.com is pretty good in terms of prices, and you can all that stuff under one roof, well except for the bobcats.

Any performance oriented pad is going to make more dust, and likely a little bit of noise when cold. For street driving, then some axxis ultimates or OEM pads will do just fine.

Check out BrakeMan brake rotors and pads. They are new to the STi but I have been following them since their release and have had some really good reviews. I will look for the link... also have a few links of where they are explaining the making and the performance perks to their system. They aren't slotted though... Sorry Lee.

ultimates dust significantly more than bobcats from what i hear... i can attest that they do dust a shit-ton.

yeah ultimates dust a ton, so if you have the extra cash go with the bobcats.

i wouldnt waste money on slotted rotors. maybe go for some 2 peice rotors if you plan to track the car, but otherwise get the cheapest OE replacement rotors you can find. (back in my wrx days I got rotors from thepartsbin.com)

Oof, was quoted 1069 shipped for the Stoptech Stage II kit (slotted rotors, HPS pads, SS lines, and motul brake fluid).

I found another cheaper deal, anyone have experience with Powerslot rotors? $589 shipped for front / rear slotted rotors, goodridge ss lines, and hawk HPS pads. That seems way more reasonable, but I've heard mixed results about these rotors. Supposedly they're not great for the track at all and are more prone to cracking because the slots extend all the way to the edge of the rotor. Street use they're supposed to be excellent though.

I've been looking for a good deal on replacement stock Brembo rotors, but they're fuckin expensive everywhere I look, and I can get a nicer aftermarket rotor for as much if not cheaper.

what is considered an "afermarket rotor"? something that has metal cut out of it?

In this case I'm just considering it something that is not sold by Subaru or OEM equipped.

I'm not totally sold on the slotted-ness, that's just what the majority of the good rotors I'm finding are.

DBA makes some nice stuff, but they're expensive as well. For the USDM STI, the best price I can find is $700 for all 4. The Brembo OEM stock blanks are even worse. Front rotors usually run $340 a piece, rears are $318 each. I'm just looking for a reasonably priced replacement, and may end up going with the Stoptech staged kit if I can't find anything cheaper... simply for the amount of stuff I'm getting out of it.

Rex, that site looks pretty sweet. Notice though that the DBA rotor setup (I don't think you can just buy the DBA rotor and it will bolt into the stock hat) is around $420 for each rotor. Ouch!

The local AAP basically just told me their pricing would be similar to a dealers?? =(

CVR Motorsports, one of NASIOC's vendors, just told me the promotion for their PowerSlot rotors ended, but that the price for all 4 rotors, front and rear Hawk HPS pads, 2 bottles of Motul 5.1 fluid and Goodridge SS lines will be $685 shipped. Supposedly Hawk and Powerslot are sister companies, so their products work really well together.

It's hard to find cheap OEM rotors it seems for the STI (that aren't questionably used), so this seems like a reasonable solution and will net me everything together all at once. I just PMed the guy to see if he'd go any lower on the package.
