I wanted to run my Azenis for one more track event. Just a single day at little talledega. They're down to ghost tread, which would be great, but the inside edge of a right front (since I have a bit of camber and was driving around on the street too much) is starting to show a little cord. With that tire on the inside rear, with not as much camber, do you think they would survive another track day? Or is that the dumbest idea you've ever heard? How much rubber is left when cords are starting to show? I don't know! :?:
(there probably won't be any sort of tech inspection, this is a bunch of Xtreme measures instructors, and plenty of people will be showing up with shot tires)
i wouldn't do it. cords are too unsafe for my taste.

Will it pass tech that way?

Nope.... if they are strict with tech
But if the track is not hard on tires, throw it on the rear and hope for the best. I want to try that little track out, dammit!

so.... what's the mode of failure here? Is there a little more rubber below cords? Carcass that chews away pretty fast? If it's on the verge of blowing out already, forget it. If I ran it, I'd definatly bring a spare or two for the ride home and check my tire temps during the event, it's just that all my spares are dry rotted POS street tires

ButtDyno bought the wheels and autoXed on the tires for a few events
although they really werent corded when I went off in hogpen. And I really only ran 1 track weekend and an autoX on them afterwards. A little cord showing in a couple spots by that point but nothing much.

one autox but that was like 7 months later

as you can see there was still some meat left on them in fact
I really think the off was more my own fuckup and the asinine instruction from unkefer "drive straight off the track" running through my head that led to the contact over the tires. Sure I hydroplaned in a puddle a bit, but Ive saved it in MUCH worse circumstances
go ahead, i don't dump tires until at least 2 inches of cord are showing on them. As long as you don't try to get it super sideways or drift through turns, then you should be alright. I'd bring a street tire or two to drive home on, but other than that, you should be fine. Let us know how much traction metal cords on pavement really give.

Can do! I ran another set of wheels/tires last time instead of the corded ones, but I'm going again tomorrow. Running the worn out set with corded one. Bringing the new set with me in case these don't last long. If I don't post tomorrow night, you'll know how it went. I'm really hoping it doesn't rain.
So I put the two best tires on the front, they actually had a little tread. So the one starting to show cords was in back, and I kept my eye on it.
Left rear when I showed up:
After my 2nd session:
After my 4th session:
In my 3rd and 4th sessions, I locked them shits up yO.... a couple of times. Flatspotted the fronts BAD. Terrible vibrations. Kept running. Then I flatspotted one of the fronts again. Apparently twice is too much.
So THAT'S what the steel cords look like! The THWAP THWAP THWAP of rubber strips thrashing about was a bit too much to ignore, so I came in and switched to my other set. Here's all the tires when I was done with them:
Neato! A fun lesson. As you can see, the first layer of nylon is no concern. There's more rubber, then another nylon layer, then rubber, then steel, and even more rubber past that. Yay! I think I got my $$'s worth out of this set.
good jesus chan! good write-up and pics... from my experience with azenis, there is no way they gripped for squat that low...
