If anyone is available tomorrow from 9-12pm that has purchased a used car before I would love if you would come along and inspect a car with me tomorrow(Sunday, 6 NOV). It is located in Gaithersburg, MD. I can throw some beer your way if you help me out...
Thanks.

What kind of car is it? Perhaps someone with more expertise in that kind of car could go with you.
2010 Dodge Ram 1500
2019 Ford Mustang
yeah, details would help....most of us can give you general tips but someone who specializes in something would be more worthwhile.
edit: just now saw your link from the miata thread to this.

Just got back from checking it out today. It was indeed a Miata.
The Good:
AEM Ram Air
Upper and Lower sway bars
Beautiful Interior
37,000 miles, $7,900
Zigen 5 rims wrapped in Falken Azenis
Borla dual exhaust
Handled like it was on rails.
Sexy
Convertible top was in good condition
Rear Glass in Top.
The Bad:
Shoddy Foglight install
Foglights didn't work
Front end collison noticeable(Paint different on front)
Uneven panels
Dent on front left quarter panel
Airbag light kept blinking on and off
Horn didn't work
Uneven idle(In neutral it would stay steady at 900 and then drop off, hiss and go back to 900, Did this every 2 minutes or so.)
Dust guard around wheel wells was not on.
Lowered on something? The owner couldn't tell me what it was...Springs or full coilovers?
The front end sat significant lower than the rear end
The dude's friend was selling it for him.
Two other people are coming to look at it today.
Nicks all over the car
Tar on the windshield
Still looking, but Miatas are definitely fun as $h!t.

yeah, from your description, that sounds pretty shady!

I don't think I'd touch that car with a 10ft. pole.
As a rule of thumb I try and buy unmodified, well maintained used cars. No frills, frills mean abuse... and you don't want an abused used ride.
When it comes to Ryan Jenkins, the story ends with me putting him in the wall.

Yea, you should try to find a nice one owner garage kept stock one with records, not some shoddy questionable modded/wrecked/broken shit - even if it's a later car with lower miles for the same money. Miatas are incredibly reliable if maintained. But ANYTHING in the shape it sounds like that one was in... is gonna be a money pit IMHO. Luckily, there should be a TON of great Miatas out there in that price range (miata.net, autotrader.com, etc... avoid Ebay and other auction junk to find a good one IMHO...)

hey rob, whats your intention for the miata? if its just your daily driver, then its incredibly impractical and not really anything special on gas mileage either. if you plan on taking it to the track (realistically) then i take it all back, but i somehow think that you'll just use it to put around town in which case there are much better options.

i beg to differ... gas mileage certainly isn't bad, it would be a blast to drive to work in every day, drop tops just rule, rwd for drifting around u-turns, cheap... what is not to like? impractical? bah, if there is ever a time to do something impractical it is now.

Its not really good either. Not nearly as good as I was expecting, and certainly worse than the integra.

well "average" gas mileage is a bit hard to take when the thing is barely fast enough to get out of its own way

I found the gas mileage of my '91 to be worse than I expected because I had my right foot down trying to keep up with traffic all the time. That car had no ass whatsoever which is eventually why I sold it. But similarly, fuel mileage on-track ended up being BETTER than I expected... really not much worse than my average street mileage at all.

I got over 30mpg when I commuted in mine, and the aero on the 1st gen cars sucks so the newer ones should be better

no kidding? i would have thought they were pretty decent aero wise, being so rounded and having a small frame to punch through the air.
