Airbag jackets? Your thoughts? (now other gear questions)

at $600-700 (I have shopped around none), seems like a decent investment if they actually help. Any feedback on these things? Any companies that you've heard who actually know what they're doing? Just something I'd probably consider IF I were going to get a bike. :wink:

So does it work like a jetski key. You go flying that the airbags inflate? Seems like a good idea if that is the case. I would just hate to have a malfunction.

yes. Just like a jetski. :thumbup: From just reading over this guy's review, they don't inflate violently. So if you hopped off the bike and forgot about it, and it went off, it doesn't sound like a big deal (although I'm sure it would be embarasing). And the C02 cartridge is replaceable. I just wonder if there's any data out there from independant tests that actually indicate these help.

Do you know where the rip cord connects to? I stand up on my bike a lot to wiggle the berries out. It would suck to blow up while that was going down.

Too bad head/neck injuries is what gets most people though.

Not really. If you get a head injury severe enough to kill you, chances are that if that didnt get you then something else would have - in a bike crash you'll get hit with multiple injuries.

I had seen them a few years ago abut I haven't really heard any word of mouth from people on the street. Seems like an excellent idea though. I'm sure its been featured on Two Wheeled Tuesday at least once.

that's why I'm kind of surprised that everyone isn't using them or knows about them since they've been around for years. Why isn't someone testing them? Either they have and they don't help, or $600 is worth more than most motorcycle riders spines and necks. I have a feeling it's the latter. I guess it's the same attitude that explains why when I drive through states where they don't have helmet laws, most riders aren't wearing them. :roll:

Does the fact that it's mesh mean it would be laughable for a track day? Come on veterans, certainly this has come up on some forums and such? Tell me if these are stupid!

That doesn't seem like it would really make a difference for a track day. Most injuries are compression of the limbs with the more serious being head injuries.

I just can't see it adding much value on the street either. I'm sure it could save you some bruises or maybe broken ribs but I doubt it would do anything from the crushing injuries that are common with guardrails and the like. It's definitely not going to stop your internal organs from bouncing about inside your chest cavity.

How much is a "refill" after you get off the motorcycle with the lanyard still attached?

See that's the thing, if they're not really well designed, they might not help at all. But the neck pillow area seems like an obviously good idea to protect from neck injuries, and if you were to hit something with your body, an airbag between you and the object reduces the G's felt by your innards. SHOULD help a lot if they're well tested. But are they?

$10-$15. They're somewhat proprietary cartridges. The good news is, at least for this company, it takes like 60 or so pounds of pressure to unlatch it, so it's going to be a good tug unless you're moving away from the bike with some authority.

They did mention some concern of that if you have a very light bike. :lol:

I'm really not even slightly concerned about that, so let's move on. I'm sure I'd get used to that minor annoyance if I knew the jacket might save my life. Kind of like getting all concerned about wind turbines killing birds. Sometimes you have to accept a little bad for a lot of good. Certainly you've gotten used to the "annoyance" of wearing seat belts in your car?

Not sure a seatbelt comarison is fair because there's nothing really to lose by forgetting to take it off. That said, I'm not even convinced this jacket really would save your life. I think the neck pillow is really a good idea, I'm just not sure how effective the application is.

If they're so great, how come no one uses it? I mean, we'll spend $500 on a blingy helmet and drop hundreds more on jackets, boots and gloves so I don't believe it's because motorcyclists are cheap.

the two times i've been down, and pretty much all of the crashes i've ever seen or heard about, they don't look like they'd help a bit. save you from some broken ribs? meh, who cares? they're not going to kill you.

haha I like the tough guy attitude there Mike. "Broken ribs? Whatev."

For those of us who would prefer to not have a lung punctured or be unable to breath heavily for a few months.. the jacket is probably a good idea.

I like it in the event I get pulled out in front of and tbone a car just to go flying a hundred feet. I'd rather go marshmallow man than pretend my 1/2 inch of padding in my elbows is going to be particularly comfortable.

For the track I wouldn't wear it. And because it's mesh it wouldn't be approved.

meh, i'll take potential (what kind of chance is it that that happens?) broken ribs/punctured lung and save my money Tongue it's just a matter of weighing risk and cost... to me, not worth the price.
