complete impluse buy so there was some buyers remorse while i couldn't get the thing running, but now that it is (unfortunately too dark to really play with it), this was one of the best few hundred bucks i've spent in a while.
my coworker comes in to my office today and says "we're buying r/c cars." we recruit another guy, do some minor research, head to hobby shop and $1000 later (all three of us) we have new toys! impulse buys are much easier when done in groups.
these things are sick fast (box says 65mph). i can't wait to do some real racing with them. with any luck i'll enjoy it (and its pricetag) more than real cars and be able to save a few bucks, but that is kinda doubtful.
anyone else have real deal r/c cars? i know kaan did, but was it a nitro or electric? if you guys come across a few hundred bucks to blow, this is highly recommended.

but yeah I thought about getting one of those a while ago. looks fun, but Id blow too much money on it
I took these a few weeks ago at the local WalMart parking lot, I guess I forgot to post them, seems like a good time,
It was pretty neat, they had real 'races' and those cars were FAST. Then they did sort of a genmay race where everybody just rammed eachother and they drifted the whole track, one guy was awesome and could drift every turn. I sooo wanted to buy one, but it was going to cost me about 1k when I was done, so I decided against it.

thats hot shit dude. seriously!
if you need some advice on tuning it let me or Kaan know. i have been in RC for over a decade and pretty much seen it all. i've done off road buggies and stadium trucks, as well as touring cars. i actually just sold my nitro stadium truck a couple months ago and hald to chuck a full gallon of 20% nitro down the drain bc i couldnt find anyone to give it to :x .
right off the bat
use loctite on EVERYTHING. those bitches will shake themselves to peices in a few hours.
if it doesn't have one....put a return spring on the throttle. if you go out of radio range it can be painful to watch your car, at full balls out throttle, take off as an unguided missle. to give you an idea of the force these cars carry, my truck hit a parked car's tire at half speed and it bent the braced-aluminum chassis down the middle at a good 20 degree angle.
bleeding the shocks will be time consuming and generally piss you off. be ready for that.
your mind will be blown at the tunability of these things. have fun, and if you're like me, look forward to years of fascination and fun with these things (not to mention a new addiction to spending money on the latest CNC'ed bulkhead or carbon fiber shock tower....). you will have no trouble finding people or groups to race besides your buddies, just search a bit.
:edit: just read your full post, i see you have it assembled....rock on. and remember to be a good boy and break in the motor geennttllyy try trimming the throttle on your radio back by a good 50% to start so you don't get too out of control, haha. if this is your first car, which i think it is....take it slow. at 65 mph its easy to forget which way the car will turn depending on if its going away or towards you.
my nitro truck, thing had insane acceleration
.12 cc's sucka! also had a high torque steering servo and some bling RPM suspension arms and reciever box.

do it. you said you live in the leesburg area? we plan on tooling around in the parking lots by work. we're in the same lot complex as babies r us.
they had the drift cars, but that isn't my bad. i think they're like 350ish for a built one.

compared to a real car there really isn't that much to blow it on. sure, you could get a new motor, shocks, body, bushings, but even then you're only looking at like $400 if you get the absolute best stuff.

<--- Yes i used to race them.
i still have my electric 4wd sedan in my room. Unless you are an insane driver... That kit wont compete with the Serpent line of cars. But way to get your feet wet and learn to burn money another way.
btw... i can go through a set of tires in 2 events with it and have a cost of $100 for the tires... plus $20 an event... nitro... glow plugs... new parts because you will break it. i'll have to bring mine out... with the bimmer world and MM body (M3).
btw if you are going to "race" it... better find out what bodies are legal to use where you are...

thanks. it has been something i'm toying with over the past few years, but now that i had two buddies at work that also wanted to do it it was much easier to pull the trigger.
ScottyB Wrote:if you need some advice on tuning it let me or Kaan know. i have been in RC for over a decade and pretty much seen it all.
awesome, once it is running smoothly i'll probably be in touch about getting every eke of power out of it. i've only had it running once aside from the break-in idles and now my glow-lighter is out of juice.
ScottyB Wrote:if it doesn't have one....put a return spring on the throttle. if you go out of radio range it can be painful to watch your car, at full balls out throttle, take off as an unguided missle.
yeah, learned that the semi-hard way tonight. got it moving and then it just kept rolling (i hadn't extended my antenna). luckily the steering is whacked and it swerved in to my neighbor's grass.
ScottyB Wrote:your mind will be blown at the tunability of these things.
no doubt. i haven't even run mine for real yet (only a few minutes in the dark out front of my house) and i'm already researching new junk and how to tune it
ScottyB Wrote::edit: just read your full post, i see you have it assembled....rock on.
yeah, i figured assembled is the way to go since i've never done it all before. as with the civic, i'll likely end up replacing everything over time so i'll just learn that way.
ScottyB Wrote:remember to be a good boy and break in the motor geennttllyy
i ran three tanks of fuel through it before even really touching the throttle.

not an issue. i'm scared of how fast this thing is. i don't know how to trim it out properly, but i'm not going to be exceeding my limits within the first couple days. my idiot coworker on the other hand has gone head-on in to a curb about 8 times already.

summit? i think there might be too much gravel...
what is the serpent line of cars? from talking to the people who worked there, classing is done by motor size? are there .15cc motors that dominate all others?
what kinda tires are you using? all the shit i saw was like 10/pair.
not too concerned about body legality. when i get there, i get there. it came with the viper and i had to pick up the s2k. getting a new body isn't a big deal.

the off-road trucks are kinda big at Toyota, and a couple of the techs have the cars. I was almost convinced to get one a couple months ago. Luckily, I looked at my bank account and disagreed.

Serpent is a brand that is sort of legendary....they've been making on-road nitro cars since the early days. super strong, super fast, and super $$$. they do 1/10 and 1/8 scale i think.
i've seen a 1/8 scale Serpent in action, with a .21 ported Novarossi engine and 2 speed automatic. its hard to describe seeing a car take off that fast, then kick into 2nd gear and accelerate just as hard towards 75 mph.
classing is done by scale size, and engine size usually, it depends on local rules.
as for tires....on some serious on-road cars they use foam tires, which are crazy grippy but wear so fast its not funny. rubber slicks are the usual fare.
and yeah, don't worry about body legality. no offense but just practicing, you'll tear it to peices just hitting curbs or your buddies. by the time you want to enter races you'll probably have a "competition" body to add to your "practice" one.
sounds like you're doing everything the right way....more than could be said for me when i started, haha. keep us up to date on it dude, and a video would be awweesome!
