Crapola, need help.
#1
Changed my oil, replaced a caliper, and bled the brakes today but no matter how hard I tried they ended up mushy (primarily the RL and FR). I'm hoping my single-person bleeder has just gone kaput, but it may be my master cylinder since the two corners that were mushy are on the same line from the MC.

So... I'm gonna need somebody's help to bleed them the old fashioned way (2 people) to see what the issue is. The car brakes alright (with the pedal to the floor) so I can drive over to whoever's place. I'm free Wednesday after the flier drop, Thursday between 5 and 6, and Friday before noon.

HELP! I NEED TO GET TO CMP!

When I replaced my caliper last week, it took a _lot_ of bleeding the new caliper.

also, did you make sure the master didnt go dry when your line was unattached?

yeah the mc didn't go dry. and the new caliper firmed up, it's the other front one that won't.

how exactly did you determine that it is the fronts that are gooey and the rear that is firmed up.

FL and RR - bled them, pedal got firmer as i progressed.
FR and RL - bled them, pedal continuously went to the floor.

I'm thinking my bleeder is just busted. Hopefully we'll get em nice and firm tomorrow night.

wouldnt the diagnosis for that be a MC or other hydraulic issue since the FR and RL are on the same circuit?

I'm guessing it HAS to be something with the new caliper (air in it somewhere) so I'm gonna take that back off and just keep messing around with it.

I really think it's the brake booster. I'm having the same problems on my 87 325i BMW. I went to a 25mm MC from a 23mm MC and it is solid when the car is off just like mike's car. However, it will drop significantly when the car is started.

(Yes I've bled my brakes just as many times as mike has without change on start.)

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I've been told numerous time that if the car holds pressure after pumping while off then the booster is fine. I know you don't agree with this, but I'd have to think not EVERYONE other than you is wrong Tongue

I had the vacuum booster fail on my Taurus about a year ago - the pedal would not sink to the floor without great pressure, but braking was fine as long as you didn't have to stab at the brakes. Just as the picture above states, when you press down the brake pedal then turn off the car, the pedal will slowly rise and will be impossible to push down with the car off Confusedhock: . This is really bad when your engine stalls at 40mph and you canÔÇÖt brake at all 8) (found this one out the hard way one night). Good luck.

Your engine stalled at 40mph and you were trying to recommend a Taurus to someone else? :?

Dave and I bled the car for a 4th time at CMP and the brakes came back. Funny thing was that no bubbles or ugly fluid came out, so we dunno what exactly happened.

Well, you could put it that way  . Another way you could put it is that I was racing my friend, tailgating him, and went to rev my engine at 40mph. Because I have a steering column shifter, I accidentally pulled in the handle and went slightly passed neutral to reverse Confusedhock: . The engine died, every warning light on the dash came on, and I had to muscle the car to a stop. I expected the transmission to be gone / the engine to be completely fucked - I swear I was adding the cost up in my head. I stuck the car in neutral, started the engine, put it in drive and hoped for the best. Surprise surprise, the transmission / engine seemed fine. Had the transmission fluid / oil changed the next day, and the car has been fine for the past 10k+ miles  . So yes, I would recommend a Taurus to someone else, and I plan on buying a SHO this summer.
