FS: 1983 Nighthawk 650

Alison and I are selling her 1983 Honda Nighthawk 650 for $800. It runs well, handles well, and is a TERRIFFIC starter bike. It is the most balanced bike I've ever ridden. It is also very comfortable. It's very quick too, much more than one would think. It almost keeps up with her brother's Katana 600.

It has a brand new deep blue paint job on the fender, tank, and rear farrings. New seat and cover, New valve cover gasket, master cylindar has been rebuilt, new brake pads, all fluids changed, new grips, new mirrors, rebuilt clutch master cylindar and slave cylindar, and lots of other misc new parts. We have way more in the bike than what we're selling it for. It was mostly a project that we could work on together and one that she could learn to ride on. The carbs (all 4 of them!) are rebuilt, and very nicely tuned and balanced.

It does smoke a fair amount when its idling. The valve seals are known to leak on these bikes. Also it would need new tires if you planned on doing any serious riding. It starts great and I have always made sure it was well maintained. Clean title, ready to ride!

I'll get some pics soon. In the mean time, it looks like this but dark blue, sometimes dark purple depending on the sun.

Nothing for now, she's super busy with school and life. The bike doesn't get ridden as much as it should. Eventually, and once life calms down, she wants a sport bike, but that's at least a year out.

It sounds like a lot of work just went into it, what would you project as far as reliability is concerned, Pete? Will this thing last a couple years without more repairs?

other than the scheduled or preventative maintenance it sounds like you won't need to do any other maintenance. Pete tends to take care of vehicles, so i don't doubt its reliability. It's a good learner/commuter bike in my opinion.

Yeah, as Jason said, the bike has a lot left in it. It smokes, so you'll have to watch the oil level, but it really doesn't seem to use much at all. We've put around 1000 miles on it and it is very tight. I rode it last night and had forgotton how fast yet comfortable it is.

With any carbbed motorcycle, proper winterizing is key to longevity. If you jsut turn it off and forget about it for 6 months, it's not going to start.

When I was cleaning it 2 nights ago, I remembered that we also put on a new starter ($120) and a new battery.

It has many thousands of miles left on it, assumign you replace the tires ;-).

Is it similar cosmetically to the image you linked? I mean, is it rusty and disgusting? Also, I was talking to some buddies and they raised concerns about the smoking thing. Is there any more information you can provide about that? Does it only smoke when warming up, or will it smoke after a considerable ride?

I'm a bit hesitant to purchase a bike older than I am, but I do like the price, and insurance is only like $135/year without collision, which also tickles my fancy (my penis).
