Gauge cluster swap issues
#1
I was curious as to the legal issues with swapping in another gauge cluster into your car. I was thinking about picking up a cheap eg ex/si gauge cluster (essentially for the tach) and swapping it in since its supposed to be "plug and play." However, it seems to me that there might be issues since the new cluster will have a diff mileage reading than the true mileage on the engine. What legal problems can I expect to have if i do this?

when you sell the car...

as long as you disclose this to the buyer it's perfectly legal.

So there are no issues with the state as far as the reading?

welp... say you take it in for service and the car suddenly shows 40k less miles on it. the service station will likely log it and it'd show up in carfax.

there's a box you check on the title when you sell it, or when it gets registered, or some such thing, so that it is noted that it isn't original mileage.

why can't you get the cluster set to the mileage of the original? On fords the digital cluster you can swap the chips and the correct mileage will show up.

mmm i didn't bother to read it all, but from his list of tools it seems he's doing more than just swapping the cluster. when i removed my cluser i needed a flathead screwdriver to pop some plastic covers off, a phillips screwdriver to unscrew all the shit holding it in... and that's it i believe. the cluster simply pops out and you plug the new one in.

or do this...do the swop and then everytime it get's serviced or inspected...swop back...then when you sell it swop again.

it's extremely illegal...but a good idea nonetheless

swopping back only when the mileage is reported to DMV or carfax...so it appears the car is only being run a few miles a year

it isn't illegal unless you don't disclose the information to the buyer.

SWAP god damnit.

You will also need to get a new title, and do some paperwork at the DMV.
Overall its a headache, and not worth it just for a tach.
Just get an aftermarket tach
