Your transmission a splode

Hehe.... rebuilt my spare gearbox this evening out at dad's shop ( for dad) with some goodies Smile

First you find yourself a spare gearbox in need of a rebuild - this one had some 3rd gear "issues" or so the seller said. Perfect.

Transmission rebuild hobby kit (name that movie reference). 3/4 synchro set, new bearings and seals.

My LSD... it started out as a GSR diff, then I sent it to OPM Autosports in atlanta to have it build into a LSD. The metal blocks in there house clutch packs.... YOu're probably thinking "why not just get a Phantom Grip". Well those things suck and put all the wear on the spider gears, and dont even work that well in the first place. This setup is actually properly designed and has real clutch packs. More on that one later.....

Hmm... and whats this too....

[Image: 1-77-22294-l-LuLjvUDP2rjzdlkPoPut3Q.jpg]

Bling!!!!

Neither of us could read "JDM". I just assumed it meant "Use BFH here"

Ah, the gaijin version. We didnt read that one either. BFH here I come!

Final drive comes with a ring gear, a countershaft to match it (thats your pinion) and a different 1st gear - I think something to do with clerances, as 1st is right on top of the countershaft/ring gear mesh. Pics for reference (not mine)

Ok, now on to the fun.......

This thing is entirely too put together. Fuck all that.

This is much better

Countershaft on the left, input shaft on the right, shift linkage (sorry... honda term is "change holder" on there. Once you unbolt the shift linkage from the housing everything just pulls out.

Pic for reference (not mine)

New ring gear on the diff (this was our snag of the night)

From there it was just a matter of pulling everything off the input shaft and swapping out the 3/4 sychro set and ATS 1st gear... and pulling everything off the countershaft to put on the ATS countershaft. I was suprised how little was pressed on - only needed a press for one spot on each shaft, everything else just slides right on. Pretty easy stuff, as long as you stay organized and put things back on in the right order/orientation as they came off.

Dad pressing bearings back on the countershaft

Assembled

[Image: 1-77-22303-l-MGNs23zEXEdVahsYjnSrrg.jpg]

We dont need no ffing torque specs!

[Image: 1-77-22304-l-ANhuixlYKJlcl2Sfmckbbg.jpg]

And then it went back together the reverse of assembly.... slide the change holder assembly back on the shafts and drop it in the case. Bolt case down, give a little love to the snap ring and you're disco.

The offending 3rd gear synchro hub - the brass synchro rings were fine, but the hub on this was all fuggered. Oh well.

[Image: 1-77-22309-l-sAihvLkdSawCqoxg8kgzGw.jpg]

I do have a problem with the diff though and I will be calling OPM in the morning - one of the bolt holes that holds the ring gear to the diff is chewed up and I couldnt put the bolt in. The problem is that its a left hand, very fine thread - 10x1.0 mm - Mcmaster-carr has taps in that size, at $80 each..... I'll be pulling the case apart to do something with the diff I guess. Maybe stuff it with flaming poop and launch it through OPM's front door.

So, thats that... for now.

I think I could hit 'em with a flaming E30 from here!

seriously, all those gears, that's like my worst shade-tree-mechanic nightmare. If I never see the inside of one of those magical boxes, it'll be too soon.

Transmissions are really easy. C'mon, you got... 2 shafts and a diff. Bunch of gears. Its nothing special... its easier to rebuild them to take them out and put them back in.

Oh there's lots of whizbangeroos.... friction dampers, synchro hubs, blocker rings, snap rings, gears, bearings... its a fuckin party in there.

I'd rebuild yours, but i have no interest in pulling your tranny out again Wink

Nah, just stack everything on the bench upside down as you pull it off. re-assembly is cake as long as you dont knock over your leaning tower of gearza.

Just don't use RTV when you put the case back together

You have to, otherwise it wont seal. Hondabond specifically, but permatex ultra grey will work too.

I called OPM this afternoon, and El Jefe is out at the track all weekend and they cant really do anything until monday Sad Which is fine, it gives me all weekend to get drunk and angry about it for when he calls me back monday.

I'm not sure what they can do for me..... I guess they could cover the cost of the tap and overnight shipping ($100+) and my time (probably valued at $2.13/hr), but thats a pain in the ass and no guarantee that it will work.

call these guys up to see how much their 10x1.0 tap is
http://www.skc-taps.com/02/index.html

also worth a shot to check out the local hardware store. they had a funky tap for my seatbelt bolt hole that I couldnt find anywhere else- even online.

10x1.0 shouldnt be that hard to find. a bunch of bolts use it, like brakeline fittings.
