i searched some forums and came up empty handed, so if you guys could help me that would rock.
i'm trying to class my car for autocross but i'm not sure if i'm in DSP or SM. the problem lies with the chip in my ECU. according to SCCA rules, for DSP : "alternate computer control modules may be used whenever an equivalent change to the conventional system is allowed. for example, alternate computer module control of ignition settings or fuel injection is allowed. direct turbocharger boost control by alternate computer control is not, since there is no equivalent mechanical allowance"
the chip in my car changes timing, fueling, and boost maps. that would be cool according to the first two sentences in that passage, right? however, is the boost control considered an alternate computer control? and would a MBC not be considered an equivalent?
cliff notes: tell me i'm in DSP and not SM so i don't get my ass kicked. better yet, tell me it's ok to lie so i can take my stock looking car and put it in stock class and roll people.

run whatever you want and just have fun. as long as you aren't competing for the scca title i don't think it would really matter. some people in hs are running slicks and 4 point harnesses. is that fair against me in my 84 beater with all seasons? i don't care i just do it for fun

same here really. i just can't help being a little competitive.

M3 (E36) - 240hp
Z3 (v6) - 240hp
300zx (Twin Turbo) - 300hp
Porsche 911 Carrera 2, Carrera 4 (964 chassis) - 250hp
Mazda RX-7 Turbo ('87-'91) - 200hp
and don't think it's a weight issue either....
Toyota MR-2 Turbo - 200hp
I say, don't tell them... because it doesn't matter. Just have fun.

Not every car is going to be capable of winning in every class. Thats just the way it works.
If thats the way it was setup, there'd be 300 classes and everyone would get a medal just like the special olympics.
Not that it matters to you since you quit after 3 runs anyways

sarcasm.
rules are rules. not every car can be the best in its particular class. you do something to a car that moves it to another class, you move to that other class.
jack's car is classed in its particular class because most likely someone built one to the limit of the rules, and that is where it made the most sense to put it.

I know, but you'd expect to be able to hang with some of the cars... at least.

Just run dsp. How hard is it to dechip it, or run another stock ecu?
just run SM. Since you aren't competing for titles, it doesn't matter. Thats where the 240 falls, and I imagine the b00stmobile will stomp me when you come up here. Just sign up for SM and go have some fun.

not when you don't know how to autocross and your car is underprepared.

the chip's soldered in place i believe, and i'd lose a ton of power if i did it (nobody likes to turn the boost down)

Oh ok, well if the chip provides a significant advantage I would run in street mod (even though I don't want you there competing against me ). Since I've moved out of STS now, I'll admit I was technically illegal for the class for two reasons. First, I had to cut metal to install my CAI, which is illegal in STS. Secondly, I had AD22 front brakes, also illegal in STS. Honestly the brakes probably hurt my times more than anything, which is why I still ran STS. Stuff like that wouldnt fly at nationals, but at the regional level I knew no one would fuss (especially since I didnt tell many people). Maybe if I was attended every event and was in the running for points people would care, but for the occasionly autocrosser I don't see it as a big deal.
Mike Wrote:not when you don't know how to autocross and your car is underprepared. OK Mike... I've got a deal for you. I will let you drive my car at an AutoX... and if you can beat an experienced M Coupe on the same day with all your worldly AutoX experience, I'll give you my car.
and...
If you lose, I get your car.
I'll even let you buy me new tires if you want to set my car up real nice.
