FS: 1984 318i

Yeah, I didn't think the day would come so soon. Got a replacement, and as attached as I am to the car, there really isn't a reason to keep it. Who knows, I still might keep it...but I hate the word "feeler." I'm putting it up here (and nowhere else) because I'd like it if one of you guys had it.

The deal:
1984 318i
164k miles
2360 lbs. 8)
Just started surface rust in two spots on the rocker panels recently - can be taken care of easily I'm sure. Other than that, rust free.
Just passed NJ inspection last month.

Major maintenance/mod dates
118k: Bilstein Sport shocks, H&R Sport springs (Turner Jstock springs 3 months after that)
130k: Tranny swap (new clutch assembly, master/slave cyls, driveshaft center support bearing, flex disc, shifter bushings, resurfaced flywheel, 75k on tranny then)
135k: Ground Control suspension - 350f/475r
145k: New control arms, tie rod assemblies (inner and outer), M3 control arm bushings (all Lemfoerder)
150k: Full tuneup (plugs/wires/cap/rotor/o2 sensor)
157k: Front brakes (325i vented discs/wider calipers, Hawk HP+ (ridiculously loud) pads - mildy warped the rotors already

Mods worth mentioning:
- Full plastic bumper conversion including front and rear valences and iS spoilers, fresh paint. Rear valence is kind of a hack job.
- Old school Recaro LS seats...recovering wouldn't hurt but they're not too bad. Padding on driver's seat bottom is pretty shot.
- Z3 1.9 shifter
- Euro ellipsoids up front
- 330mm Victor steering wheel with horn button (turn signal tab is busted)
- Dynomax muffler, which is cheap but doesn't sound too bad
- Sony CD player and Alpine 5.25's all around
- Countless little things, and I'm sure I've forgotten stuff too

Known issues:
- Rear main seal is shot. Had the seal, didn't install it when I did the tranny conversion, regret it now. Leaks pretty bad.
- Engine runs great, but burns a little oil.

Car will be sold WITHOUT the BBS RX's, rollbar, and smoked tails. The wheels it will have are black steel wheels with brandy new Falken Ziex 512's (few thousand miles) and the old Ferrari replica wheels with H&R hubcentric spacers to match and near-dead AVS es100's.

I'll have the car in NoVA for a little longer if you want to see it, but it'll be going back up to Jersey in the not too distant future.

Asking $2000, negotiable.

I would love to have some of the parts off of it. However, your car is too nice to tear it apart. Hope it finds a good home.

By the way, what are you getting now?

Oh yeah, another thing I didn't think of: the paint has brushmarks, and pretty bad. A good cut and polish will shine the car up pretty good (had it done once), and if you stay on top of it, they won't be too bad. I just haven't had the time (or passion) to wax it often enough.

I brought the replacement home today:

It's unbelievable.

whoah. Confusedhock: That's quite an upgrade! Only .2L larger though, so I doubt it'll be much faster....

I am somewhat interested in the 318 though, but it's just too upgraded for me! Do you still have the H&R sports around? Any chance you'd want to sell off the GC and put those back in? Looks great though. I guess I hadn't seen pics before (or really wasn't paying attention), the plastic bumpers look good. And I didn't know you had a rollbar, cool cool. If I were you, I'd keep it as a track car, it's perfect

and my "I still want it" side comes out.... ever done compression/leakdown on it? Is the motor pretty quiet or does it sound like a poorly oiled sewing machine (like mine)? Ever done any wheelbearings?

Thanks guys. The S is an unbelievably capable car - I couldn't be happier with my decision. Well, maybe I will be once I get the title and can register it and drive it more than around the block.

I've considered keeping the 318 as a track car - it's a great decision because it's so financially chuckable. It just needs work (okay, just the rear main seal and rear bushings)...I've basically just lost any desire I ever had for turning wrenches on it after 6 years of ownership,

Ugh, decisions.

Chan - I sold the H&R Sports a couple years ago for $140 worth of beer. Ah, college. I haven't done a comp/leakdown test, but I am curious as to what the results are, so I might do it. The motor sounds like a 21 year old motor, so it's not quiet, but it's not bad. I've never done any wheel bearings, because I've never had any symptoms of bad ones. New ones would probably do wonders, but none are bad at this point.

More maintenance info:
- Radiator and fan clutch are 3 years old
- Like 3 years ago, I went through 3 sets of ICU/ICV sets before finding one that works. It's fine now.

Keep it as a track car, IMO.

If you ever wanted to track the s2k, it needs a rollbar..... and right now there is only one company selling them and they are in the middle of a redesign, so who knows when that will happen - apparently its a royal pain in the ass to get one to fit properly in the car.

Having the e30 to track will be fun - its light, easy on equipment and readily disposable.
