the dub got a face lift
#1
Hey guys,

as most of you know, my mom's had the gti mkii for a while now and after doing the valve cover gasket mod to make it rubber instead of cork to help stop the leaking of oil...(yes, the valve cover gasket was made of cork)...i decided to help the lighting situation. The old lights sucked at night and one of them lost an aligning bolt harness and constantly pointed straight at the ground. With a little help from scotty yesterday we were able to do the popular vw mkii conversion to the 7" single rounds.

Here are the pics: Big Grin

I also changed the wheels since i had one steelie with 3 alloys. Now i have the teardrops that came on the 16v's from the later mkii's

Some of the parts:
Core support and grill thanks to Rex!!
Headlights and harness' thanks to Futrellautowerks.com

The old hood latch was held on to the old core support with rivets and we were a little confused as to how we were going to attach the old hood latch to the new core support. I couldn't have done this without the help of Scotty:

just wanted to share Big Grin

Next projects for the car (long term goals):

suspension (springs/struts/front tower brace) -- should happen soon
brakes (pretty much the whole system)
shifter linkages
engine swap (obd-1 vr6 is what i'm looking for)
Interior (roll bar, seats, steering wheel, hub)

just some "white" H4's from wal-mart. They help a lot more than the 9004's that were in there before.

edit: i'm thinking about getting a relay kit for them to help with the output, but i want to see if anyone has a digital multimeter or voltmeter i could use to test the wiring (if you do let me know Big Grin)

Whoa! Hot shit you guys! That looks freaking awesome!!! Jay, you were right, those headlights are the shit.

Dad also has a fluke lying around here, but if you want to use it come do it soon! We're in the process of moving and the new garage won't be built until the middle of the summer at the earliest.

But holy crap. That looks great. Badgeless grille soon?

Thanks!

What's a fluke?

Badgeless grill will probably come soon, plus upper grill spoiler and the lower trim piece. I really want to get the suspension on there, so i'll be working to get that on there sometime over the summer.

dumb question time, what's the black cross on the front of the bulb glass?

It's supposed to give the headlight a "black" appearance (reflecting in the chrome) while still maintaining maximum light output at night. It's supposed to work this way, but i mainly bought them for the way they look. The regular crystal clear housings were $10 cheaper and i liked how these looked. Big Grin

A fluke is a brand of multimeter than is both feature-filled and hideously expensive.

lol, yeah i was definitely thinking about it having to be a lamp or a wall insert, but definitely working. I actually just fit the lower trim piece from the old grill on the new one, took a little dremeling though.
