Apparently there's a difference between certain gases. BMW, Honda, Toyota and GM created a new standard of gas called top tier. They did this because they were not satisfied because it was fouling out their engines. It seems only Shell, and Chevron are the only gases local to the Burg that use that standard.

interesting, but too bad shell is so expensive
The majority of the time that a gas company puts fuel into a pipeline for long-distance transport it does not recover the same barrel at the other end. It's conceivable that they recover the same type of fuel, though unlikely. In most instances differentiations between fuel types are made at the dispatch stations (the last leg of the trip before your local gas station) by using additives and modifiers. Historically the differences between these gases (the different major brands) is pretty minute.
It's interesting to hear that somebody is making stronger detergents, though. I wonder if it pans out to much.

A little off of the subject, but I have heard that there is such a thing as winter gas and summer gas. I am guessing that this may be true. Winter gas may have alcohol added to rid it of water? Is this true?

There are winter and summer blends of gas. That is one reason they say gas is high now is because the refineries are having to switch to the summer blend.

Pssh.
Gas is high because oil companies are posting their largest profits in history, not because refineries are switching to "summer blend".
PS. "Summer blend" sounds like a douche flavor.

douches have flavor?
