As the title states, I'm now in the market for a commuter / work truck that I can use on construction sites. My new job will be fronting me $305 / month as a truck allowance, so I've got some room to work with.
Don't really care about mileage as long as it runs. $2000-$8000 max. 4WD would own but is not necessary. Prefer Jap trucks, Toyota, Nissan, etc... I'm just not willing to drop any money on a shitty old Ford or Dodge. I guess I'd consider a Chevy.
Anyone know someone who has a truck for sale ? Or has anyone seen some decent trucks around at local H-Burg dealerships ?
Best I've found so far is:
'00 Nissan X-Cab Frontier 4 cylinder, Red, 2WD, M/T, 59,000 miles for $7950 + 30 day warranty (engine, tranny, powertrain). This one is local, I like giving local ppl the business. Price could be talked down for sure, but it seems like a decent buy.
'95 Toyota Tacoma 4x4, M/T, 115,000 miles, $4900
'94 Toyota Pickup, 2WD, M/T, 128,816 miles, $2,000ish I think.

From what I was told during the interview process, I'm not being hired for manual labor. I'll be overseeing contractors and job site efficiency. But I was told that if something needs to be had from Home Depot or another construction supply company that I'd need the truck to go haul it myself. So it would basically be to pick up emergency lumber or other miscellaneous things. I doubt I would need to do any towing.
Just being on a construction site would not permit me to use the suby at all really, especially if I need to haul stuff around. Although it would be fun to play in the mud, I'm too vain to see it get fucked up and would prefer to keep the miles off of it anyway.
Cliff notes: Don't need it for towing, just need the bed for hauling shit around!

on a side note- get a good spare wheel/tire for the truck or maybe a cheap set of used ones bc you'll get a lot of nails in the tires at construction sites.

Old body S10 with the 4.3L - my cousin rolled his and it still runs fine - never put a dime into it. It's the late 80s boxy style.
Seems like I'm not the only one who thinks they are tough either -

Lee, stay true to the subaru family and buy a 1980's BRAT. you'd be the envy at every constuction site dawg!
This would be money, and I wouldn't be supprised if the V8 wasn't a typo (it's popular to drop a small block in the S10.)

old Tacoma or any Toyota truck will kick ass
if you need a video, I've got one of a couple of brits TRYING to blow up/destroy an old Toyota and they couldn't even after letting it drift out to sea, driving it through a building, dropping shit on it, driving it down stairs, etc.
Yeah hehe that top gear owns ! I can't believe it still ran after it dropped from the demolished building  I've found a few 'Yotas in the $5-6k range, so I'll probably snag one of those up if something better doesn't come along.

old toyotas are the shit. if you buy one, paint over the tailgate so the lettering just says "YO" 8)
I gotta echo what our Local SHO Enthusiast had to say.
There has never been a better pickup truck than the 4.3L 4WD S-10. I had a blazer of the same vintage, and it would just scoot. It shares all of its parts (except for the heads and crank, obviously) with the Chevy small block V8, and it's a kick ass motor. Lots of torque, acceptable fuel economy, and everybody and their brother knows how to work on them.
And they're cheap.
Like, two months of your truck allowance would pay for it.
Pick up a valley trader tomorrow, open to "4X4" section, close your eyes and put your finger down. Chances are, you'll hit an S-10 for under 2 grand.

Yea hehe ! Since the rex is no longer going to be a commuter car, but instead a weekend warrior, I'm planning on bigger upgrades than previously expected. Was going to go Cobb Stage 2.5 (VF30/VF34 turbo, STI injectors), but now I'm thinking even bigger fuel injectors and an 18g or 20g with UTEC engine management ! ^_^
Might as well make it a beast if I'm going to drive it rarely.
