Life changes...

Well everyone. Big news. I'm moving to Chicago. I've accepted a job with CGI-AMS.

Now for the car related problem. I don't really need a car in Chicago but it would be nice. I really don't know if I need a RWD 2 door sports car in the city. Especially in a place that gets as much snow as Chicago.

The dilemma is, I can get more for my RX in NoVa than in Chicago but I don't know if I want to sell it yet. It would be so hard to part with this girl after being with it for so long. I was thinking about inexpensive more practical alternatives for the city.

I was thinking anywhere from a used impreza to a used wrx. What does everyone think I should do and please support your opinion.

What about the VR6 you were talking about? It is front wheel drive so it is better in the snow than rear wheel drive. How much is cost of living in Chicago?

Oh - and congrats on the job - what are you going to be doing there? Will you be living in the city or in the 'burbs? Everyone that I've ever talked to about Chicago says its a fantastic place to live, but its too dayum cold for me.

Thanks everyone Smile !
Well, Chicago is more expensive than NoVa to live, and I'll be living in the city to boot. No more 'burbs for me. In NoVa you can rent a lakefront 2 person for $1400 inc. utils. In Chicago I'll probly be looking to split something around $1200/month for two people. You can get pretty decent places for that much and some even have 1 car garages. I figured I can easily afford a 4 year loan on a WRX for 15 grand.

Also, I'll probly take a long loan out and just pay it off real REAL early. Concervatively, I should be able to pay $15Gs off by the middle of the second year.

I'll be doing IT Consulting work. I'll be on customer sites most of the time being their "Technical Advisor" as I understand it. Either way, it's a job with a lot of travelling, but not like PEC's. I'll never spend a friday or a weekend away. The job won't include programming. More of a business side. I'm really excited because it's really an avenue I'd like to pursue.

As far as the RX goes. I'm sure I can pull AT LEAST $3800 for it this summer in NoVa. I'll list it for 5k if I sell it and see what happens.

I get to spend 3 weeks at home now... first time I've been home (other than a few saturdays in between travel days) since I moved at the end of December Sad

PEC gave me a verbal offer at the interview, then gave me a written offer 10k lower than what they said. Sahar (HR) was really pissed when I turned them down. Sucks for them.

I'd so be up for buying the 7 cept, I dunno if we go together. Every one I've tried to buy has lost it shortly after I couldn't. D's blew the engine... never ran well after that again, the other guy had an electrical problem and a brick thrown through his windows... I should probably stay away for the sake of your baby.

You'd be up for it except it's too expensive for you!

Edit: Your friend "D"'s RX was not in great shape at all man. That's why even before the engine blew, I recommended you not to get it. Myke thought it was a pile too.

Do PM me about your experience with HR at PEC. My opinion of them is already kind of low, but I'd like to hear firsthand.

I did... and the mobile stuff was fine. All of the BS surrounding the move and the un-kept promises about what was supposed to happen once I did move has left me kind of sore, not to mention they havent honored a single vacation request since I've started.

Edit: The pay and benefits package is good, and after my year here is up I'd like to consider other options with PEC, but I will probably be looking elsewhere as well. I dont think the company as a whole sucks as they have some pretty good defense contract work, but I did walk into a bit of a shitstorm with this position.

Oh yeah, as for Chicago, go cheap. Public transit is excellent in Chicago so I'd go for a 98-2000 Impreza RS or a used WRX.

just go ahead and get some serious snow tires for the 7, like hakkapilettas or blizzaks or something. you'll be fine, and opposite lock will be like second nature

oh yeah....not to jack your thread, but now that Jen has gotten into Wake Forrest and Emory as grad schools, i'll either be in Winston-Salem or Hotlanta, so i'm sure i'll end up closer to at least a few of you bastids
