Well what can you say at this point? I'm curious to know if war supporters had the benefit of knowing this endeavor (not a war since we never declared war) would cost $1.4 trillion would they have been as gung ho? Had people known it was not going to take a lot longer than 6 months to sort out would they have been cheering when Bush announcing we were invading? I suspect some would not have been.
At this point its sort of irrelevant though because now we have to make sure the new Iraqi gov't succeeds. Otherwise it would be just a waste. We could argue ad nauseum about 'we should have' v. 'we shouldn't have' but the fact is 'we did' and now we've got to finish it.
shouldn't have!
weeeeee!
funny thing about this whole iraqi election, most of the people are not running in public because they would likely be assasinated. so say one of these private leader runners get elected... how long will they and their family live? heck, even if one of the pbulic candidates gets elected i guarantee he or she is dead before they celebrate their first year anniversary in office. sounds like we've really succeded there!

s'like "WE'RE GOING TO IRAQ, WE'RE GOING TO IRAQ, AHAHAHAHA"
insane shit like that....anyone in the right mind, would have seen this as not being a quick in/out.....AND WHERE THE FUCK IS ALL THIS MONEY COMING FROM??????
Mouse
fucking shit.
not this BS again.
do you have any idea how many political threads I resisted starting because everyone is sick of this crap? *cough*oilforfood*cough*
OK so surprise, surprise, its not exactly the stable situation we would have liked at this point. What do you suggest should be done from here on out? Its easy to gloat and say 'I told you so' when you have the benefit of hindsight but its not so easy to come up with answers for the future.
I agree, any idiot could have seen that this was not going to be a clean, simple, and easy military action. But I don't particularly care to dig up that dead and decomposing horse.

I suppose you're right. We're there, we broke shit, might as well fix it. At what point, however, do we say enough is enough? I honestly don't see this ever ending the way Bushiepoo wants it. When do we pack up and say "Fuck it!"?

wars cost lots of money.
this war cost lots of money.
captain obvious to the rescue.
if you didnt see this beforehand, you are an idiot, so save the trying-to-be-dramatic "shit br0 1.4 tr1llyun y0!"
the cost of this war was the #1 reason I wasnt overly supportive of the war. I havent been against it either, because its something that needs to be done. I just hope all this spending combined with the global climate doesnt bite us in the ass.
FIRE FIRE FIRE!!!! POST POST POST!!! WE ALL KNOW MORE THAN THE GOVERNMENT DOES ABOUT THE SITUATION, BE VOCAL!!!!!
hey chan, just think of the number of e30s you could buy for $1.4T... like 2.95T or something!

I think the better question is, 'how do we not get to the point where we have to pack it up and call it quits?'
We've been trying hard to train the Iraqi police to fight the insurgents but it seems like the insurgents will have the resources to fight a prolonged campaign of violence and disruption. My gut feeling is that this will continue for many years to come, not unlike the Palestinians vs. the Israelis or the IRA vs. the Irish Government.
I think the key is to give the Iraqi democracy enough momentum that it is not vulnerable to failure as a result of terrorist activities. Training the Iraqi police and ensuring the elections process proceeds will be two key factors.
Beyond that militarily the US will probably need to continue to use Special Forces to kill and intimidate the insurgents wherever possible. This is also where the human intelligence is vital because as the insurgents get more time to organize they'll be increasingly difficult to root out. I think we could probably save a lot of money if we scaled back air power in the region because we're not facing any sort of threat in the air, and the nature of the situation means that we can only use so much air support and bombing against the insurgents.
Politically the BA needs to help convince the Iraqi people that the insurgents are not simply the enemy of the US, they are the enemy of the Iraqi people. In the end its their freedom and they've got to be willing to fight for it. Unfortunately this could lead to a civil war.
I really wish Bush hadn't burned his bridges and used a little bit more diplomacy in this situation because at this point we could certainly use troops from other countries to supplant our numbers and put more pressure on the insurgency. Unfortunately it is not clear if that was possible anyway, given the fact that France and several other countries were most certainly involved in the oil for food scandal.

I was thinking something similar, I mean, hey, if they slipped me a few ferraris, it wouldn't even touch the decimal point on that, who would know?! 8)
on that note, with the 1.4T instead, we could buy a NICE E30 (almost 5 grand) for EVERY MAN WOMAN AND CHILD in the US.
So tired of this mess. :x
