i use photoshop to make the individual frames, then piece them together with coffeecup gif animator. Then I shrink it with online gif crunchers. You can get about 7 frames of 16 colors into the 7k that AOL will allow for it's AIM buddy icons. My rick james one didn't fit at all cuz it had too many colors.

Imageready works nicely for animated gifs as well. Never have to leave the adobe environment.
