So I'd really like to start kicking this around. Who would be interested and some ideas on what vehicle to use as a platform. I know Rex said he has a vehicle he wouldn't mind selling for use in this competition.

i'm up for helping out, but not really interested in doing it on my own. My recommendations:
1) Something you can get to weight virtually nothing
2) Good handling will help you on the autoX. Doesn't have to be stellar, just so you aren't at the bottom of the list.
3) Unique. If cleanly done and abnormal, you'll get big points.
4) V8 mofo. I think every winner has had a V8 in it just because of the obscene amount of easy 1/4 mile speed it can get you.
5) get the car for free
Thanks for clarifying that you don't want to do it alone! I was going to delegate everything to you and completely ignore the fact that we have a dozen other guys who like cars and I thought would be interested in this.
I've left tihs alone expecting some other people to at least chime in with support but, no, nothing?
I'm all for getting a free 8 cylinder vehicle with decent handling and not a lot of extra weight, but I don't know how realistic that is. Rex has a Geo Metro (LIGHT) and I think that is a possible candidate. We're not entering to win...we're entering a car that will hopefully compete in all three events and finish not in last place.
I'm hoping to hear some more opinion on this from those of you out there.

What is to prevent 1 person from selling an $80,000 Viper to their friend for 1 cent and entering that into the competition?
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

They have a fair market value in the rules now, if you get something for free you must assign a fair market value to it, that was added last year I believe.
I'd love to bulid a GRM car, only probably is most of you guys are like 2hrs away.

In this competition the entries are WAY above what we are capable of now... some of these people have incredible fabrication skills and a lot of resources to back it up. If we were to enter the challenge, it would need to be with a car that is unique- so it gets an article written about it and our club name gets promoted. Thats what we were looking for from the original idea- club promotion. I also agree with dave about light weight, V8 power. If this is a serious interest for next year, we will need a planning committee and fundraising committee. We shouldn't have to spend a great deal of our own money; time yes, but money no.

I can fabricate... i just dont have the shop anymore... and in the fundraising you are going to have to account for special tools needed like a welder and stuff like that... its not a part of the car so it doesnt hit toward the 2,006 mark but its something we'll need to have.

I apologize for being realistic, Mike.
I want to enter this for fun. That is what this club is about right...having fun? If everyone here wants to not just compete, but to win...well we have huge obstacles ahead of us and we need to get moving now. No one says we can't go back with expectations to win in 2007 once we've seen what it takes and have gathered a little experience. I could see us being very competitive once we have been there and learned a something.
Personally I think a 5.0 liter mustang lx would be the perfect choice for a car...plenty of aftermarket for both the engine and the suspension, plus we could probably pick up well in our our budget.

There is a difference between being realistic and pessimistic.
With the mindest that "we're not gonna win" you're likely to half-ass a lot of things, and the whole time you're preparing a car to lose... Doesn't sound fun to me.
With the mindest "we're trying to win" you'll do some A+ work, but likely show up with an underprepared (due to time and skills) machine, which I'd much rather.

If you guys really want to do a 5.0 lx we could do it in my shop. Only problem is it is about 2.5hrs from JMU and ~30 min from fairfax.

doesnt have to be a v8
an old chrysler turbo can put out some great power cheap, and its a lot lighter
4g63 wouldnt be a bad choice either if you can find one cheap enough.
although either one of these in a rwd platform is going to involve mounting it in the backseat, which is waaaaay more fabrication than any of us can handle
I can't see any crazy fabrication like the CRX that was made from 2 crx's, a chevy van, an old corvette, and a wrecked mustang... so to be unique we either need an "odd" or different car, a car with a unique swap, or something more stock and boosted. Also, a black car with a yellow MM paint scheme would look hot. Its really got to stand out.
As Chad pointed out, we almost have to have a permanent garage to build it in. Driving 2.5 hrs seems unrealistic. I doubt Neil would have space in his place, but its a possibility to ask him. He has a small shop downtown H-burg and he knows a lot about car repair and racing.

I have a metro. :-D Everyone is welcome to it. I'll sell it for $.02, and GRM probably won't even flinch at the price.
We could also get an old 2WD Toyota pickup and put a 7M-GTE in it. You laugh, but it would have a retarded power-to-weight ratio, is easy to do, is cheap, and would be unique. (unique as in, there aren't many pickups at the 200X challenges) There's also a huge "pimp" aftermarket which could get us hooked up for the Show. I'm not sure it would do so poorly in the Auto-X with the right driver and practice, and a 7M-GTE on a 75 shot of the giggle gas might only run for 12 seconds, but it'll be a fast fucking 12 seconds.

I've got a Prisim we could hack up Always wondered if I could get a 5.0 in there...

Unless somebody is going to pony up the cash to outright buy the initial vehicle, you might want to plan for the 07 meet so that you have more time to raise the cash to follow through with this. Also need to consider who is going to own the car after the competition and what will be done with it (another reason why an initial investor is important). How are you going to get it down to Florida if you have to trailer it?
