Ah geez -

The XR is running. It is not, however, finished, broken in, or nearly ready to be unvieled. Right now, it's running 7psi of boost until its broken in. It is also running the stock 35lb injectors and a VAM. On Dec. 4th, it gets its next stage of goodies, 55lb injectors, a Mass Air system, more boost, and tuned a little bit more. A few weeks after that, it goes to the dyno and gets full boost, tweaked, and dialed in.

As it stands right now, I can't floor it because the 35lb injectors can't deliever enough fuel becasue it's pulling in so much air. So, I work it at 1/2 throttle and it keeps up pretty well. The drivetrain is great though, so that's a step in the right direction.

I took it to VIR this weekend to the G&W Fall Fling, and it was great. I blew two gaskets between the external wastegate and the header, yes, twice, and each time the hot air cut (burnt) through a spark plug wire. I had a fire once, it was awesome. No damage though, and I was able to get it fixed. I got several good laps in on full course, and got to see how the car felt when pushed hard. I have to reingenieer the wastegate setup a little and I think the engine will be good to go. It ran very cool, didn't complain about high RPM's, so I think overall it will be everything I'm hopinf for.

At 7psi and half throttle, it's substantially faster than it was at 14psi and stock, wich is encouraging. I'm really excited to see how it feels at 20psi. There's a lot of boost management that goes on at that level though so that it comes in smoothly and doesnt send the rear wheels into a fury of spin. I'll update you on how that goes.

As for the autoX, I won't have the new wastegate plumbing done by then, so I won't be in attendance.

Thanks for the curiosity! I'm not trying to hide anything, I just don't want to count my chickens before they hatch. Building an engine/car like this is a process. The car had been running for about 20 mintues before I got it. It was so fresh, I even got to burn the paint off the downpipe. I put 400 miles on it before VIR, so I was fully expecting some bugs. G&W was a great event to work them out.

I'm at the 900 mile mark now, 1000 will be hit tonight, so the Dec. 4th enhancements will be made on a ready engine. I'll let you know how that goes.

Onward and Upward!

Pete

pardon my ignorance, but i always hear diffreent numbers for injectors... liters per hour (self explanatory) and lbs... mind explaining the lb rating to me?

Its actually lbs/hour, but often abbreviated to just lbs. Just a different way of stating the flow rate (although when doing the conversion you have to take into account the density of the fuel)...

I don't understand what you want to know but I'll try and help.
The rating is in lbs of fuel an hour.
55 lbs/hour injectors can be roughly converted to 550cc's/min.
A more exact number would be 578 cc's/min.
I've never bothered do this conversion in reverse to find out what size my injectors are in lbs/hour, but I'm going to do that now.
Approx 62 lbs/hour. Interesting.

True true. My calculations assumed that the gasoline involved weighs 6 lbs a gallon at 15 degree cels.

I want to see some huge dyno numbers. Post that sheet once you've got it.

If that quote is for me, you'll probably be disappointed. I'm building a strong engine for reliability, not HP. It will be tuned down from what it will be capable of so that I can make it through the whole event and still drive it home. I get my kicks on road tracks, and not as much on the drag strip, although I'm sure I'll drag it once or twice for benchmarks/fun. So, it'll have good HP, but not as much as it *could* have.

I'm bad with boost, after all, this whole project started with an adjustable boost valve on a stock engine, and a resultant shockingly obscene amount of white smoke....Confusedhock: But, turning, taking a line, braking, etc, will be up to the driver in this case, so hopefully I'll tweak myself instead of the boost controller.

I'm sure you understand.

Pete is too modest. The XR is an unholy speed machine.

i bet that 2.3 will put out some nice torque though, with such massive displacement 8) well for a four banger anyway, heh. can we do a "guess the dyno numbers, win a ride" game?

Yeah, definately a 1st on track session! And I didn't have an instructor either, so that was pretty fun. The car held it's own until it burnt through a spark plug wire and was limited to three cylindars, lol...
