My fault for being on the wrong side of town on a saturday night.
Hit up for my license plate sitting in the dash, my exhaust not being oem in noise produced, and for having vinyl (track numbers) on my windshield.
Keep it up Harrisonburg police...nothing like pulling over a kid for 3 non moving violations while ricers fly up and down the street.

The non-moving violations are still no fault but your own though.

you got a tickets for numbers? can you have numbers on the side of your car?
JackoliciousLegs Wrote:you got a tickets for numbers? can you have numbers on the side of your car?
I'm pretty sure you can... although if they were on the windshield, it depends.
YOu can fight the exhaust ticket, though, because it's a judgement call, not a quantative measure.

yeah, but you can tell T's exhaust is 3 inches. There are no 3" factory exhausts on eclipshits.

As I understood it, you don't have to have a factory exhaust on the car.
The law, I thought, is really open ended about this subject. Factory location, decent muffling, vauge type wording.... or am I reading the wrong book?

Thanks RJ. Remind me to bitch slap you for missing my point...would an old woman in a Oldsmobile have been pulled over if she was breaking the exact same laws as me? I don't have a problem with the laws, only with unfairness in how they are upheld.
Quote:well the exhaust and the numbers are pretty dumb tho jesus
No. It is not dumb of me to put my track numbers on in vinyl as opposed to constantly placing and removing them in shoe polish which is difficult to remove. I did not know that it was illegal to put superfluous stickers on the windshield and calling me dumb for it deserves a bitch slap.
No. The exhaust is not dumb. Driving around on the street without the silencer in is, so I guess I'll try and track it down sometime soon.
Quote:you got a tickets for numbers? can you have numbers on the side of your car?
Side of your car, yes. Windshield, no. I didn't know this until last night.
Quote:YOu can fight the exhaust ticket, though, because it's a judgement call, not a quantative measure.
Yes, and the judge will side with the officer. Always.
Quote:yeah, but you can tell T's exhaust is 3 inches. There are no 3" factory exhausts on eclipshits.
Thanks Jack, for being wrong. The law has nothing to do with the size of the piping or the size of the muffler. It says that the exhaust, if not stock, must be comprable to and not produce excessive noise. VA Police have decided that anything louder than stock is excessive and a judge will always uphold this decision.
Quote:The law, I thought, is really open ended about this subject. Factory location, decent muffling, vauge type wording.... or am I reading the wrong book?
You are reading it right.
__
I didn't post this up here to hear anyones opinion. I am well aware of the laws regarding modfications to the exhaust, as well as VA's continued requirement of a front tag mounted where a cop can see it (they always want it on the bumper). No I didn't know about the windshield thing but it doesn't matter, season ends Sunday and they numbers are coming down.
Please keep your mouths shut...unless you understand that HOW the law is enforced is my complaint, and not the laws themselves. Jaywalking is illegal...if you were ticketed for it you would bitch too...I have been ticketed for speeding ZERO times, nor do I have a DUI or any serious moving violation. I havn't totalled any cars either. What I do (racing at the strip and driving this same car on the street) hurts absolutely no one and the only reason I was pulled over, aside from the 3 minor equiprement violations, was because of my age and the Japanese make of car I was driving. That is my complaint.

Travis, don't let the man hold you down dawg. Cops will always descriminate against guys 16-25 and it pisses me off even more than anyone could know. Just don't take shit from cops when they're harassing you.........cause it really isn't fair, if you feel you're being harassed TELL THOSE PIECES OF SHIT what you think and what SHOULD be done, and hey even if you get a ticket maybe JUST MAYBE it'll get somewhat through their thick skulls and not just harass us but everyone instead.........or noone at all. Oh well cops will always be dicks on a powertrip, definitely sorry about your luck but it could always be worse

1. I think G. was referring to the fact it was dumb that the cop gave you a ticket for the numbers and exhaust, not that you had it.
2. The law says that a muffler can't make noise in excess of OEM equipment. This law is completely subjective and unjust. Travis, you should go to court and say so. If you DO go to court, especially if you show that you are a responsible driver (by showing your driving record) you may have your fines reduced. In addition, you could say that your exhaust is designed to be a performance stock replacement, and meets the most strict objective standards for noise in the country, and that you shouldn't be ticketed just because a police officer had nothing better to do that harass someone who has worked hard to make their car nice. And I'd say exactly that. What do you have to lose?
3. Life sucks. I know what it's like to get an assload of Bullshit tickets from a bored, jackass with a badge on a power trip. Not saying that all cops are assholes, my brother and Sister-in-law are both "cops". But alot, and I mean ALOT are assholes. And you can say we should be mature about it, and you can say "Oh, it's not true, they're not all dicks", but really, the exceptions only prove the rule.

Code of Virginia Wrote:No person shall drive and no owner of a motor vehicle shall permit or allow the operation of any vehicle on a highway unless it is equipped with an exhaust system of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particular vehicle as standard factory equipment, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise. An exhaust system shall not be deemed to prevent excessive or unusual noise if it permits the escape of noise in excess of that permitted by the standard factory equipment exhaust system of private passenger motor vehicles or trucks of standard make.
The term "exhaust system," as used in this section, means all the parts of a motor vehicle through which the exhaust passes after leaving the engine block.
Chambered pipes are not an effective muffling device to prevent excessive or unusual noise.

No not all but you can tell if their an asshole IMMEDIATELY on how they treat you when they speak the first words to you, i treat all cops with the most utmost respect until they don't show me respect also, and it's VERY easy to see when a cop is disrespectful when you are being as polite as possible, so just return the favor. I've only had 1 HPD officer show me even the tiniest bit of respect but the other 9 that haven't make me generalize them.

ok ok, you got me. so you can have something that isn't exactly oem, but it cannot allow any more noise than a stock system...
i was in court for this, i've talked to lawyers... i'm passing on the info i know. you run something that isn't stock, you get a ticket... quite simple.

I wonder how your defense would turn out if you measured your exhaust with a decibel meter before and after you installed your exhaust. I imagine you could say "2Db increase is hardly "excessive", don't you agree, your honor?" I wonder what would happen? After all, a police officer doesn't carry around an decible meter, so he can hardly say that an exhaust is "excessively" louder than stock.
I'm writing a letter to my senator and rep and Gov. Warner to ask that this code section be reviewed and revised, suggesting we adopt California standards for noise. It's rediculous.

What the fuck Mike. I told you your opinion was worthless to me in this manner...you claim to talk to lawyers and such and yet you are still WRONG about this part of the law. Give it up. I mean seriously...what the fuck did I say...I'll say it again......COMPRABLE TO STOCK AND NOT PRODUCE EXCESSIVE NOISE.....THESE ARE SUBJECTIVE WORDS BITCH.

If so, I'm sorry G. You got to spell some things out for me.

I've done this before. Doesn't help. I will point out that the cop said, and I quote, "Can you please start your engine and give it about 2k rpm. When I pulled you over I had my windows up and I couldn't hear it." That is literally what the motherfucker said...how can it be excessive if he CANNOT hear it while driving right behind me...
Quote:you deserve the tickets for all the shit you talk about your 30 whps.
seriously, sorry it happened.
Haha. Please motherfucker, just because the turbo doesn't kick in until 4k rpm doesn't mean you'd have a chance. It might look slow.....but when does vtec engage? That's what I thought....more of a wait, less power. Until you b00st it that is.

I know man. But the thing is, one person can't go into court and make this arguement. Action, like writing the governor, needs to be taken by all of us and big money like SEMA needs to be involved if this kind of shit is ever going to stop.
__
The thing is...these are like 25 dollars a piece plus 54 dollars in court fees. I'm not worried about 150 or so dollars, especially because fixing them will have it dropped down to just the 54 dollar court fee.
But...I hope to point out how lame the entire proceedings are. Would I have been pulled over if I was in an 86 IROC with off road pipes, NO front tags and a huge number 8 sticker across the rear windshield?? Of course not. My goal is to get the court fees dropped by quoting the officer on how he couldn't even hear my exhaust while he was in his car pulling me over, and by showing the judge how ridiculous the thing with the stickers is (they are track numbers....I run 111 mph quarter mile trap speeds with them on...how can they obstruct my view??) Do I expect to lose these arguments...of course. But I will make them.
