The story:
This photo is from last year's Macau GP, which is a crazy race in China. The whole place is set up for car racing, so it's completely line with Armco, concrete walls and catch-fencing...
The city is kind of on a cliff, and the corner where I shot this is up aqt the top of the cliff, on the side of a mountain. It's a natural S-turn, and the road is cambered both ways, so its a left-right flick. They're doing about 98 to 100 mph on the exit.
Steve Plater was on a really hot qualifying lap on a Honda CBR600RR. He'd just come really hard through the left, and he flicked right and just caught the wall with his shoulder as he came out of the corner. You can see he's trying to fight the bike off the wall and push it away. A lot of guys got very, very clost to the wall, but PLater was the only one I actually saw touch it...
After the session was over, I went down into the pits and showed Steve the picture, and he was absolutely ecstatic. HE punched the air, then had to show it to all the mechanics. He even had the yellow mark on his leathers, where he touched the wall but did not fall.
