Project Baby Overland Audi
#1
As I’m sitting here during everything going on and ordering car parts I find myself missing MM and haven’t posted on the forums forever. So the story goes we’ve had the Q5 for 2-3 years now and I’ve always wanted to toy with it a little, as well as always wanting a little overlander (for short durations) so after searching for quite a while I found h&r makes, or should I say made lift springs (1”). After them sitting in my garage for a couple months I finally installed them last weekend and noticed that the tires are getting a little low on tread. Long story short general grabber at’s are now sitting in my garage, I think I’d like to ad some bright lights on it and explore a roof mounting tent. I know there’s some forums members who are a bit more hardcore overlanders, I know east coast overlanding trails aren’t plentiful but does anyone mind sharing some spots?

I think H&R has already discontinued them, glad I happened to get a set. Was able to do a no contact wheel/tire drop off for mounting. I’ll get a better picture tomorrow, the sun made it a little difficult to get a good picture.

i love the idea here.  if Jake's insane off roading adventure last year taught us anything its that most cars can go way further than you think off road if they just have the clearance.  the audi should make a really capable gravel road eater.

i'd look hard at researching the Mid Atlantic Backcountry Discovery Route as well as the Virginia Trans American Trail (the full TAT is 3/4 of the US, east to west coast) which uses much of the same trail system as the MABDR.  both are mostly gravel and doubletrack through national forest land.

here's a good writeup Automobile Magazine did on part of the MABDR while testing the 2018 rubicon.

FWIW, since its related to your Audi, there's a guy who wheels a Cayenne (non-turbo, its the VR6) in the north parts here in GA and just bashes the shit out of it. Granted, its quite modified but he generally hangs out with rigs that, on paper, should be able to leave him behind but can't. its a very capable chassis.

That Cayenne is dope. Belongs to the guy who paints all of Leh Keen's Safari cars. He wheels it with those cars all the time.

Let's see this little Audi on some trails!

yeah, seems like a cool guy.  he's part of a GA Trail Rescue group i follow where volunteers will winch people out of bad situations for free, which automatically makes me a fan.  hoping to see the cayenne sometime on a group ride down here.

Armor is > than height for surviving. height is helpful but you have to protect critical items. i fully believe in aluminum for armor. Sylvia has trashed on aluminum skids with just 31 inch tires on her jeep.
