I would like to buy something that I can take to the track and race with the rest you guys, needless to say my Tacoma just won't cut it out on the track. Maybe a MR2 turbo, or anything Toyota, gotta keep the loyality. Any suggestions?

If I had to buy a different track car I would look for something somewhat cheap and reliable. Honda's(Civic, CRX) always come to mind, or a Mazda Miata. The MR2 isn't a very popular track car for some reason. I have yet to see a Toyota at the track for HPDE or amature racing.

mr2s are great autox cars... but their rear enging design and short wheel base makes high speed control difficult. Turning in one at speed can very easily send the rear end out of control.
Miata, if you fit in one.
Cheap, reliable, easy on equipment and a blast to drive.

MR2 is mid engine not rear engine silly n00b! 
Ive instructed several times on track in MR2 turbos, very capable track cars and a lot of fun.
If you are a diehard Toyota fan and want to keep it in the family, it would make a great track car, but for the money you could find a smarter choice.
we had a pretty long discussion on them in the lounge, if you want to search and dig that up

MR2 turbo, while a very fun car, might be a bit much handle on track until you get really used to it. Due to the mid-engine design, it tends to spin very easily and keep spinning (similar to a top), making for a very easy target for guardrails.
I will put a 2nd in for miatas and Hondas as great cars to learn on. If it is fun to drive, easy on parts, and cheap, that is the perfect track car IMO. Might look into my friend's integra in this FS section too; if I had the spare cash, I'd pick it up as a track car.
May I reccomend a MkI MR2?
It'll teach you some good lessons on the track, and it's so cheap you can consider it disposable.

What a bunch of pansies!  Mid engine cars are incredible on track! And the first gen MR2 has a great racing history. I personally have never driven an MR2, but my experience with the Fiero on track left me with with a lot of smiles, and even I wish sometimes I'd gone with the MR2. You're punished more quickly for bad habits on track, but when you're doing things right, it's a great experience. As close to a supercar as you'll come without spending $$$$$$$. And yes, it's an even better autocross car. But it's not like they just suddenly step out without provocation and around you go. Too much trail braking, or lifting at the wrong times, and you'll get it. Just brake in a straight line and only feed in trail braking at autocrosses and in "safe" corners. But generally, with stock suspension, they are very stable. I never spun mine on track (yes, it was early in my career, and I'm sure I wasn't "fast" either). Only when autocrossing and I was REALLY asking for it. :wink:
I would second the recommendation for the non-turbo though, (1st or 2nd gen are both ok-- depending on your budget) it's a much more competitive autocross car, should be more reliable, I would imagine easier to repair, and will be much cheaper and safer to track. There is an aftermarket for them and a lot of development done for that car if/when you want some serious suspension. If you want to "keep it in the family", I can't imagine a better Toyota. And you'll still be able to run down a Miata on track no problem. :mrgreen:
And don't let 'em talk you into a Honda, you'll learn more and have more fun with a RWD car, and double the fun for mid-engine. Oh, and if you do a NASA driving school, you'll never get the classroom instructor to shut up abou how much fun his MR2 was. :lol:

BUT for someone in college who has to drive the car every day, a Honda is a better answer. How much junk can you haul in an MR2 or Miata? Can you fit more than 1 passenger in either? Can you drive in the snow very well?
Once you're out of college then looking at a MR or FR car is more viable. The only reason I'm not actively pusuing them is I am too damn comfortable in the hatch and I know how to fix just about anything on it... If I had a 2nd car to commute in I'd definitely be in something much sportier/at home on track (probably MKII MR2 NA, new Stang, or E30 325).

And don't take my Honda comments personally Mike! You don't have to defend yourself! But, this guy's got a truck too, so the MR2 doesn't have to be the "everything" car.
They weren't taken personally, as I agree with you wholeheartedly that RWD is a better way to go, I regularly bash Hondas and often wonder why I drive one. I didn't know he had the truck, in which case he should forget a Honda.
My only point was that if you need a track car that must also double as your daily driver (moving shit in college, driving in snow) a Honda makes more sense.
