Nurburgring Track Rentals
#1
Was just looking at SpeedHunters today and stumbled upon this outfit that's running a giveaway for 'Ring rentals (EU only Sad ).

http://www.r-garage.de/

The prices look pretty damned reasonable per lap, and they have a nice selection of cars. Would be cool to do a trip out to Germany, maybe hit up a factory tour or race, then spend a day or two lapping the Ring. It looks like there are even places that rent bikes too

I think Chan and John are the only MM'ers who have driven the Nordschleife thus far, who else wants to join the club??? I don't know that I could line up a trip this year, but maybe in 2017?

Here are a couple of other Ring rental companies:

Fuck yeah 8)

Looks like the way to go is to pick a day that the Ring is operating under track day rules. That means no tour buses and a higher competency level for the drivers, and it means that you can run multiple laps at a time with full access to the straight. It also means it should be less crowded on track and that we could plan for back to back days starting in the morning (if we're so inclined).

Only problem for planning is when the Ring schedule gets published. I've read that it doesn't get solidified until March or so, which would make a Apr/May/Jun 2017 trip a bit harder to plan. Maybe the Summer or Fall would be better.

I want to do this, badly. Also have a friend who works for BMW and lives in Munich. He could probably get us a factory tour.

My initial goal was to do Germany this year but I think from a financial perspective, it's smarter to hold off. So, maybe this would be a better idea.

Mahvelous!

It would be pretty rad to do a small road trip on the autobahn before or after the Ring. Munich is about 5 hours from Nurburg and Stuttgart is not that far from Munich. Could hit both BMW and Porsche factory tours. Could even rent something relatively fast for the autobahn.

I think if we plan for 2017 we can probably swing this and really get the most out of it. Would also give more people the ability to come. I have another friend who's definitely interested in coming, and I can imagine there'd probably be another one or two of my buddies who'd wanna go too.

Wouldn't need to be too long of a trip, but I think we could do maybe 2 days at the ring, than another day or 2 of factory tours. That way if anyone wants to do other stuff either before or after they can do so and still make the whole trip about a week long. One way to do it would be to fly Iceland Air, and have a day or two layover in Iceland before heading to Germany (or on the way back). My friends that have been to Iceland all had a blast.

In a world where people find food, clothing, dates, employment, and housing on the internet, planning a car trip on a car forum is now weird to you? :dunno:

The Iceland Air layover is pretty great, and the prices were waaaay cheaper than flying direct, but it has been years so maybe it isn't as good now.

Just so you know - the factory tour is only during week days.

Hmm, I'll have to crunch the numbers on that, didn't realize it might also be cheaper. That might be a deciding factor on the route.

Well the factory was closed so we actually did the museum. It's pretty cool - I can post some pictures. Lots of motorbike and airplane stuff too. They also have sort of a "corporate store" thing going on there too. I still would have maybe rather done the factory tour, but they are right across from each other so you can do both if you want.

I'll be trying to use credit card miles to fly for free, so my route will be determined by how many points I have and with who. Should be easy enough though.

Ah good to know. If you're using miles we'll have to try to nail down the timeframe as far in advance as possible because sometimes its hard to get award seats if you're less than 3 or 4 months out (10-12 months for popular vacation locations). What airlines do you have miles with?

The card I just got is through Chase (Sapphire Preferred). I'll have to check, please hold.

So who wants to go to New Zealand? I heard they have a killer car scene and they filmed famous movies there.

Emailed one of the Ring rental outfits. Some points of info:

* Track day schedule is usually published in Jan/Feb. If we were going to do a trip in May/June time frame that would probably mean anyone using frequent flier miles would have to sign up pretty soon after the schedule is published and date is agreed upon. Seats to Germany don't fill as fast as seats to Hawaii or something, but only a certain number of seats on a flight are able to be booked with award miles.

* Ring Garage doesn't charge extra for extra drivers. So depending on the number of people we could share a car (ex: 2 or 3 to a car).

* If we're sharing a car, then rental outfit will take care of tires and pads if they get worn out during our sessions. To make the most of the trip I'd want to do 2 days of trackdays but people can tailor their schedule to fit what they want to do.

This is why you need the Capital One Venture card. No blackout dates/seats or anything. You book your trip using any website you want. Submit your receipt to Capital One and they reimburse you for whatever you paid (up to the amount of points/miles/whatever they call them you have obviously). Getting ready to do this for a possible vacation to San Diego.

That's a good point. I had gotten a United card a long time ago so I've stuck with it, but maybe I should switch to something like the Capital One card after I cash in this current stack of miles. Only downside I can see is that upgrades are much cheaper with the United card but you've gotta plan way out in the future to take advantage of those anyway.
