Official MM Vehicle Registry: Add Your Rides!
#1
I was bored this morning and thinking about how we always speculate that BMWs or Miatas or something are "taking over" MM.

I thought it would be cool to actually see what the most and least common cars are that MMers own and have owned, so I threw together a really quick form in google docs so we can create our own registry, similar to the ///M Registry (http://www.bmwmregistry.com/detail.php?id=7675) and other enthusiast registries.

So here's whatcha do, go here: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1IDezYaOOwF0kS89F46bgEVuakYV3lIi_-KFEmSOk6hg/viewform">https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1IDezYa ... g/viewform</a><!-- m -->

Fill out the form for each one of the vehicles you've owned. There's a link on the completion page that lets you go back and do another entry.

The results are automagically sifted into 3 buckets, then sorted by manufacturer and then production year.

Currently Owned Cars: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...1525147523

Sold Cars: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...=879143944

Full List: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...1793460204

Now get busy! I wanna make some pie charts or something.

EDIT: Oh and by the way I'm not going to give anyone editing permission in the forms so they don't get dicked up by accident. If you want to edit something and haven't closed the completion page, there should be a link to allow you to edit the entry.

If you can't get back to it, or you want to add a photo or make an edit after the fact, ask me in this thread and I'll manually add it to the RawData sheet.

Nice man! Now I have something to do at work tomorrow.

Can you also give each car a unique id so we can see how many times it has been passed around the club to different owners?

We'd have to enter VIN#s to do it accurately, otherwise someone would have to know 100% that their car was previously owned by an MMer and make sure they found the same ID# for it that the previous owner used.

Another thing I thought about after I posted it was a year bought and year sold column, that way we could track BMW and Miata ownership over time. If I do it now we'll have to go back and update everything that's been entered so... eh. :dunno:

EDIT: Woo! 45 entries already! If I have time today or I get bored this weekend maybe I'll start fiddling around with a stats sheet that'll automatically create some graphs.

One suggestion - change "name" to "name of owner..." - I was not clear on that.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

This is fun to read... we could very well have been Madison Motorsports: Brougham Edition (D'Elegance?) with some of what y'all have owned. I spy an Eldorado, an Allante, an 88 Royale, a Bonneville, and an Imperial.

Pimp hand strong, gentlemen. Pimp hand strong.

Now that we have >100 entries I started fiddling around with making some charts. I'm pulling them together using pivot tables based off the Raw Data sheet, and then using filters or additional formulas in them to condense it down to the data I want. Point of the story, I'm not very good at this, it's probably done using the worst methods possible, so don't crucify me if you dump a bunch of data in there and break my charts.

We can now say that BMWs are in fact the most popular make in MM, leading the pack at 25.2%, followed by Honda at 12.6%. Mazda is trailing with a wimpy 3.9%. You miata guys better start represetin'

The most popular decade was the 1990s at 47.1%, followed by the 2000s at 28.8%. The oldest car we've owned is a 1954 and the newest is a 2013.

The most popular model category is overrun by BMWs. 325i taking the cake, followed closely by the 318i and then the M3. 4runner and Miata take the remaining spots.

We've sold 71.8% of the cars we've ever bought.

The craziest among us are Channing with 22 total cars owned (Jesus Christ, Channing) followed by Dave with 19 and DJ with 10.

Check it out: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...=657007018

One more thought:

I should have done another column seperate from "Model" for all the trim info, specs, #of pedals, important mods and that crumpled in fender you grew fond of.

For example it's great to capture that we have an LS1 M3 in our midst, but I can't easily roll "M3" "M3 Convertible" and "M3 LS1" into one category to make pretty charts like this. When I have more time I'm going to see if I can add that extra column without breaking all the functions, hopefully I can and turn it into kind of a notes field, and that way we can have consistent "Make" "Model" "Color" formatting and you can still store your fun details in a column i don't have to try and process.

How do you wanna do it? I wasn't sure if it would be a slight against the DSM Gods to just chop off anything after the first word, therefore implying a lowly Eclipse GS is in the same category as a GSX.

I was able to tack an extra column on without breaking anything so go ahead and go nuts dumping all the details you want into that field, but keep the "Make" "Model" and "Color" fields as brief as possible. One word if you can.

After watching Rex dump all his stuff in I'm realizing my "Most Popular Models" "Decades" and "Owners" reports are not going to update automatically. I had to either filter or create additional formulas to display them right, and I need to figure out how to do it better so they won't get broken every time we make a new entry.

I'll have to work on that later though. If anyone is a Google Doc/Excel Disciple and knows how to make it awesome, shoot me a FB IM and I'll give you editing permission.
