I'm looking into my current insurance plan (state farm) and really would like to find a way to have my car covered for HPDE events. I wrote to Chris Cobetto, heres what he said:
"Most policies allow for recovery if something happens during a "school"
which is what the HPDE is. As long as it is not a timed competition they
normally will take care of you. You have to read your policy carefully
though. I don't know of any company that insures track cars specifically
though.
Shop insurance companies but you may want to keep you extracuricluar
activites to yourself. Check out the fine print and go with the insurance
co. that doesn't specifically mention track events."
Does anyone know of a way driving schools can be covered?

Didn't we have a brief discussion on this topic:
http://www.mmsports.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=718 (read down towards the bottom of the first page and on through the second)
Or are you asking about specific HPDE coverage - ie "We the insurance company will cover any on-track incident, you have a $$$ deductible for that specific coverage. We rule." ?
My two feet.
Well as Chris said, 99% of insurance companies will cover you for accidents during a HPDE session (course they'll prolly drop you afterwards). They set up the HPDE sessions so that it doesn't specifically negate insurance policies. With us having instructors in the car with you, classroom instruction, and a lack of timing device on school cars it's nothing more than advanced drivers ed, and you should be covered. I know there's a few racers out there that have race insurance, I'm pretty sure that you could get something similar for school groups.
oh yeah, me forget

You need to read your current policy. If there is *anything* in the policy excluding coverage for DE's, driving on track, etc then you will not be covered.
You can purchase coverage through another carrier, and coverage is listed for xx events per year (you have to notify them that you are attending the event, where it is, with what group, etc) and based on the declared value of your car, and only covers on track incidents with a rather large deductilbe if your car is a total loss. I cant remember the name of the company though, but I'll find out if you want - a guy I know has his 993 Cup car insured for track events.

nah, they won't drop you, just jack up your rates, if they drop you they can't get their money back. I have SF and I can't find anything specific in my policy that denies me from coverage at an HPDE, drag racing, yes, wreck there I'm f-ed.

don't drag race!!!
i don't think i'd ever report my car for an accident on track.. the raise in rates and what i'd get for the car isn't worth it... the only reason i HAVE insurance on the pile is in case it's stolen or i have an accident on the street.

When we were at VIR a guy crashed his Z06. I heard somewhere that he was going to just leave the car on the side of the road? What is he trying to skirt around when he does that?

by doing that, he is probably going to say that he was involved in an accident and the other driver drove off before he could get his info. Might work, but I doubt it.

It will work if either
A) The adjuster is a complete moron.
or
B) His story matches EXACTLY the damage done do the car. I hope he remembers to take the tech sticker and numbers off the car first.

I do not know of anybody who has had an accident on track and made a claim that has not been dropped afterwards. You can purchase track insurance, but normally the deductible is very high ($5000).
As for leaving the car on the side of the road, the usual excuse is that they swerved to avoid a deer. However, in doing so, you run the risk of being investigated for insurance fraud, which is a felony.

Evan was dropped, but also racked up 3 speeding tickets.
Either way, a $5000 deductable is cheaper than a $30,000 car.

that's why we don't track $30,000 cars... well, some of us...

Well, a $5000 deductible plus $2000 a year adds up quickly... I'd rather run the risk of wrecking my car and paying out of pocket since I know I'm in control. Driving on the street, however, there are more factors that play into the insurance equation in my opinion. Sure, it's possible that I could total my car at the track, but most wrecks you see aren't total loses.

I think we can all agree that those guys who sit there and take their car to the side of the road after an on-track incident are douchebags. You knew the risk when you decided to play so be prepared to face the consequences. If you want the extra coverage you better expect to pay.
As John said I don't know anyone that hasn't been dropped after claming an on-track school incident. Unless someone I know has made a claim I'm unaware of and didn't get dropped.
I would also like to add that the reason track (race) insurance is so expensive is because much of their clientele are privately-owned race teams, and these insurance companies assume that many of these cars will get wrecked. While I sure flog the car, I am in no way at the limit that many "semi-pro" / club racers are at since my best time at SP is still ~3 seconds slower than my T2 comrades.

and RJ, my speeding tickets were after I was dropped.
After doing one HPDE event in the L, I decided that I wouldn't be tracking anything that I couldn't deal with losing. So, even though I love the Z - it wouldn't affect us at all if something were to happen. It is insured on the street - but I would never make a track claim because USAA insurance is too good and inexpensive to risk getting dropped.
And this is why the WRX doesn't get tracked. It's our only truly reliable car and of course we still owe the bank some money on it
