MM update from el presidente- semester in review and looking forward

So far I could not be happier with how MM is doing as a club this year! There are still some events and important improvement points that need to be hammered out but I am confident that myself along with my hardworking officers will complete nearly all of what we set out to accomplish come May and the conclusion of the year!

In review, we started out with a mere handful of members, most of whom were barely active at all. We worked hard to plan, prepare, and drum up excitement over the summer and once the semester began we quickly grew to around 30 plus very active members. The club has grown exponentially and continues to grow through our active efforts to market MM and get the word out on campus about how exciting the club is! The officers have also began to establish a great relationship with the TMI autotech crew, Kyle Lemish- a local car enthusiast and dealership owner, and also the new Quaker Steak and Lube in town which we hope to work with for our annual car show and also to use the restaurant as a place for MM to get together.

Some events that we have held thus far include a special VIP style trip to TMI auto tech aka the home of the Ariel Atom where MM received a private tour. Shortly after we were allowed to walk into VIR for free and spectate some of the open wheel racing that was going on. The college autocross was a great opener as was the “fix the ReXJ” event where we pimped out and got Rex’s Cherokee working and looking great again. I was extremely proud of our highly successful first club meeting at our private airstrip (thanks to current member Chris Lacey) where we had a DJ come and setup an play an awesome playlist not to mention several photographers were also there to take photos and video. We also brought a grille up to the runway and grilled burgers and hot dogs and after taking some group pictures and socializing for a bit we then allowed the members to run their cars up and down the strip drag race style! We finished the semester with a get together at the Quaker Steak and Lube to hang out and enjoy some food in the “Corvette room.”

Coming up and in the works- planning ahead

After a great start to the year and a large amount of new and active members, the officers and myself are more excited than ever to make the Spring semester even better than the Fall semester.

Some of the events, ideas, and plans we are working on over the holidays include:

Educational classroom meetings as a part of our bi-weekly schedule:
- We realize that for the most part the beginning of the semester is going to be cold. I wish to have at least 2 meetings designated towards something educational. I appreciate the insight and thoughts of the alumni on this matter and their willingness to help teach and cover some topics. I am thinking that a date in January and a date in February where one to two alumni can come and speak for 15-30 minutes on a topic! Topics can be covered such as forced induction, anything track-related, driving techniques etc.

1 to 2 track events visited at least- summit/ VIR:
- The ’13 NASA schedule is up- the officers and I will lock down a minimum of two dates which MM will be attending – below are the dates:
Feb 15-17 VIR
Mar 22-24 VIR
Apr 27-28 Summit Point
Jun 14-16 Summit Point
Jul 19-21 VIR

Ferrari of Washington- our second “trip”
- We were able to accomplish our goal of getting MM’ers a private tour of the Ariel facility, now we wish to get the spring semester trip accomplished as well with a trip to the Ferrari of Washington dealership. Communication with the dealership will be made over the holidays and matters will be discussed.

Car Show:
- Our annual show date will be chosen over the break and planning will begin immediately- after party festivities will most likely be a cruise and a BBQ or get together at the Lube in a private bar/room area for the club. The Virginia Tech car club has also invited us out to their show- I have been in communication with their officers and we are planning to attend each others shows/ work together!

Cruises here and there:
- Once the weather gets nice we will have cruises

Fundraising event- ran by Tyler and Chris:
- Tyler and Chris will be planning and holding a fundraising event for MM that will benefit both the club and a local charity!

Karting:
- We have a credit with GFORCE karts in Richmond and we will choose a weekend in February.

Possible trip top local drag strip:
- Current member and successful drag racer Abbie McDonald races at a strip which is near JMU, we are looking into getting some MM’ers down for some runs at an official strip- we are always a “circuit” club…why not try a different form of motorsport!

Update on scoring and getting Top Gear challenges down:
- This is something the officers will hammer out and get organized for this semester- after a recent donation by alumnus Kaan a Craftsman tool set valued above $300 is up for grabs as a prize!

MM Ski and snowboarding trip:
- Besides the soon to be organized trips to Masanutten during the winter weather months for the current students here at JMU, I wish to organize an event for both the current students and alumni to participate in. The officers and I will choose a location that works best for the alumni and the students- Wintergreen, some location out in West Virginia, or another possible location will be chosen. We are either going to look into renting a cabin for the students and alumni to stay and crash in- sounds like a great time to me!

We are going to lock down dates for the large scale and important events over the holidays and during the first couple weeks of January a spring calendar will be announced with these dates.

Lastly, warm congratulations to the Bradford, Elsea, and Gallamore family on the new addition to their families! Also congratulations to Gerald Irish and his fiancé on their engagement!

The officers and I wish you a happy new year and a safe and enjoyable holiday season!
God Bless,

For reals, you all deserve a big collective pat on the back for your work and efforts this year. Really brought the club back in fighting shape; something we can all be proud to be a part of.
