Guys, just have the oil analyized. Blackstone has me going 6k on the Expedition and the Mazda and says the Mustang looks good (10k oil change intervals is just ASKING for problems). I change that every other track weekend, because, well, that's what I do. Blackstone says they noticed no wear on the mustang oil in 2 track weekends, so while I _could_ go more, at this point I'm not. I use to pour it in the beater when I had one.
^^^^
I change mine with the same oil every 3000 miles, and guess what, I dont burn ANY oil. You guys are saying you burn 2 quarts every 5-10k miles???? Seems like something isnt right to me. Thats A LOT of oil. I am past my 3000 mile mark, and im at 5000, but thats because I havent done an autocross or track time on this oil change yet, it shocks me to hear that you guys are burning oil.
For me (personally, and im just saying what works for me), I change it with the same oil, every 3000 miles (usually) and I dont burn any oil, so that works for me. Hearing your guys stories of burning lots of oil only confirms that ill stick with the good ole addage of 3000 miles. I have absolutely no oil leaks (checked when I had everything off my engine) and I (knock on wood) hope I dont have a headgasket leak.
Plus I have a DSM, and according to you guys its completely unreliable (Whatever you say, rolls eyes) and yet I dont burn oil, have no oil leaks, and also burn no coolant.
If your really worried about it or your a cheapskate on your car and want to make sure you get every little bit of life outta your oil, then go get it analyzed, otherwise dont give any conjecture or "theories" by this "expert" on the internet.
:end rant:
Yeah, the Blackstone report is pretty neat. Here's an example from a report for the XR:

thats weird, my STi which has the same engine, but more high strung recommends every 7500mi or 3750 under extreme conditions. i just do it every 5k miles cuz i dont track the car, but i also dont exactly scoot around town like a grandma. its also easy to remember to change it cuz i've gotten on the schedule of x5,000 and x0,000 mile oil changes. i'm at 49,400 right now, so i imagine i'll be changing it pretty soon.
i too dont understand how changing it too often is gonna drastically hurt the car, but its certainly not worse than changing it not often enough. although i think newer bmw's recommend synthetic every 15k miles according to their own manual.
i remember back in high school, one of my friend's dad worked at mobil HQ helping with chemical patent laws. apparently, mobil1 tested independently showed to hold up in engines well over 250,000 miles without showing any significant breakdown in lab tests, however the oil filters would need to be replaced every 20k miles.
now i know lab tests are different than everyday stop n' go traffic, but its still an impressive stat

I blackstone labbed the MR2 when it was still being daily driven, and the Valvo High Mileage stuff was still good at 5K. The Castrol synthetic/redline synth combo was still good according to blackstone lab after 10k in the Outback. I just added a quart at 5k and I was good.
Also DJ, if your car isn't burning any oil then your rings are galling your cylinders to hell.
I hate oil threads cause everyone goes crazy about what/how/when about oil and change intervals.

as always, a DSM'r defending his car for no apparent reason. yes, i burn a good amount of oil. no, i'm not worried about it one bit. i hit 9k rpms quite often... oil will get consumed when you do that. all high-strung hondas (ir, s2000) burn some oil.

then it must have been one of the other "experts" in there. i didn't put out an exact thread and quote for a reason, because i can't remember.

Yeah, I never should have started an oil thread... I was just concerned because the change from syn to Dino made things better in the old van...something I have never seen before. I will say however that the piston slap seems lightly more noticeable. Thats nothing new in a TD, but it just was clacking a little more then it was before this afternoon. I think the bottom line is the van is in serious need of a new (and bigger) turbo and a good set of rings...ahh...to wait for summer....

I dont see how me not burning oil is galling my piston rings.

so i've got a quick random question that i feel is best for this thread.
since i'm tracking the car this weekend and next weekend, i would like to change the oil before abusing the piss out of the engine. however, i changed my oil about ~1500mi ago so i feel that this interval is pretty short. draining and filling the miata is no big deal, but the oil filter is in the most annoying place on these cars. its not a big deal to leave the filter on for another round of abuse since the filter is only ~1500mi old, right? i imagine that the extreme heat and pressure is why its recommended to change the oil for track events, but i cant imagine that there would be a significant increase in dirt and deposits from track use. someone correct me if i'm wrong or tell me that its okay.

More important to change the filter than the oil.

i understand that for a car thats driven daily and is near the oil change interval, but i'm well below that interval. wouldnt the filter media still be effective in doing whatever it needs to for a little while longer?

Sure - but so will the oil

I think his point is "doesn't the Oil take more abuse over the weekend than the filter?"

my point is that the oil takes a lot of abuse on track where heat and pressure is much higher than that seen in everyday driving. this can cause the oil to break down and not be as effective in lubricating parts. the filter is a mechanical means of catching loose particles. i'm sure heat and pressure will affect it, but it probably wont degrade the filter nearly as much as it would the oil that sloshes around a crankshaft that spins at 7k rpms for 20 min at a time
edit: um, yeah what andrew said

Not according to Blackstone, at least in my car with Mobile 1 and a big ass Motocraft High Flow Filter. They saw almost no different in 1,000 track miles and 3,000 highway miles. In fact they thought I sent them brand new oil after almost 1,000 track miles.
