I'm looking at getting some used from struts for the Daytona off TD.com. He has one set or rear shocks, the KYB Gas-Adjust. These are the only next best thing to the Konis. So they are a given, he tells me they have under 3k miles on them. The question is the fronts.
Mopar Perfornace Struts - "For Autocross" w/ 15K miles on them. Owner comments they are not nearly as loose as new replacement pieces but not a real performance strut. More like a "sport" thing.
Monroe Formula GPs- OEM Shelby from an older Daytona. Guys says they are ok. Saleen put these on the mustangs in the 80s as well. Has anyone ever heard of them? I can't find much on the net about them. From what I read they were the only other strut beside Koni reds Shelby used and the only one they used on Daytonas and CSXs until about 87.

AGX's are spotty though. For some make/models, they're good. Miata drivers like them and they're 8 position adjustable.
MR2 owners hate them. My rear driver side shock blew out in less than a year. I think one of Dave's AGX's also crapped out.

Thanks for the tirerack link. Yes, those are the rear shocks. I cannot afford the Konis and I would rather do something custom then pay $550 for Reds (all 4 corners) but I would like to be able to use the springs I got for the car right now, which requires a decent set of shocks and struts. The springs are just Eibach prokit...but they are the best availible besides custom shit. Suspension options for this car are very limited, no AGXs, no Tien, no ground control, nothing. So, my plan is to get some "better then stock" shocks and struts and use the eibachs until I man up and do something custom. Nick and I are going to work on a e30/TD hybrid coilover system, thats the plan at least.

how many times have you set shocks to koni to get revalved? I hear NOTHING but horror stories about that process and for what it cost you'd be better off buying new ones and selling the old ones.
me? zero times. i've heard countless good stories and zero horror ones. if i were to do it all over again, i'd buy used yellows and send them to get revalved.

gas-a-just? lol, I wouldnt use those if somebody paid me. I could even get them at advanced auto, we sold them. IS the car gonna be lowered? Only konis and other expensive custom shocks have shortened bodies that help deal with a shorter suspension height. Koni is the only way to go, im sorry, dont even waste your time with KYBs, my stock shocks are basically a mix of KYB AGX and GR2s and the stock shocks will blow out eventually with lowered cars. Plus everyone on car forums knows not to run KYBs.....

Well, Like usual, its not a freaking DSM. I don't have a huge aftermarket catering to my every need. So I have to make due where I can. The Konis are the best availible. They are stock dimensions, no shortened tubes. They are of the "Red" veriety, no yellows made for FWD Chrysler. It is a known fact that the GR2s blow ass. It is generally accepted that the Gas-a-just are the next best thing to the Konis on the rear. The question mark comes when it is time to pick the fronts. Most GPs are 20 years old at this point...not generally considered an option. The GR2s and Monroes are junk. There is no Gas-a-just strut. So the only real choices are Koni and a Bilstein touring model. Its not even freaking yellow and blue...just plain black. So I have such a limited offering that $50 for a set of 20y/o real performance struts might be a good bet for now. The guy says they did fine on his Spirit ES...which was running stock Shelby springs. The car will be sporting the -1.5in Eibach prokit. I'm still torn on what to do. Might pick up the G-A-J shocks from him and just get the bilstein Touring struts....$110 a pair.

go with new gas ajust stuff ,if it really is the best available, do the people saying this have track or autoX experience? Im not questioning the reputation, just that how a shock is used determines if its good or not.
if there are konis available get em! If you cant afford em, use the shitty shocks till you can afford em.

The Konis are availible for the front and rear. You must remove the rear to adjust them so I prolly never would. I think i will skip the Konis on the rear. So, maybe using the Monroes I have on the front for now and use the GAJ on the rear. The Konis for the front are $340. So I guess I can go with them...it will just take time. As for track/autocross experience. The only real motorsports TDs are used in are Auto-X and drag...if that says anything.

if the konis are the best bet, then i say save up for them and do it right. it hasnt been asked i dont think but what are you setting up your TD for?

yeah, i guess the biggest question is where is the car headed? If you want to track it, I would just ride on what you have and save for the good stuff, since you will probably end up getting it anyways eventually, so you'd be wasting $$ on whatever you buy now.
As for the comment about KYBs, I love them on my supra and they have been good to me for several years now on the 240. I'm going to try Konis out soon, but part of my reasoning for that is just to see what everybody rants so much about.
Jeff do the cheaper option for now and meanwhile we will work on hacking up a spare set of e30 strut tubes to fit on the daytona so that you can just buy inserts from now on.
Not to mention you could weld a spring perch on while you are at it and have the height adjustability.
