I figured its time I give you guys the lowdown on the formula SAE team they have here... because its awesome. You can get some real pictures (ones not taken by my camera phone) and some real information on the car(s) here:

I just thought Id throw up some pictures of the shop. They just built a huge addition to the engineering builidng here and with it came an awesome shop for the dfr team. Basically theres around 30 people working on the car pretty much year round, and about 20 of them are doing a project on the car for a year long graduate class. For instance, one group this year is designing and building a traction control system, hopefully it actually works. Anyway, I'm driving the car for the first time this sunday, Im really excited about autocrossing something that goes 0-60 in under 4 seconds and pulls over 2 G's. WHOOOPIEEE

Why doesn't JMU have something like this? They built a hovercraft for crying out loud. And all it does is hover in a trailer in the parking lot.

that's really sweet Hunter. definitely let us know how driving it goes...i can't imagine how 2 g's must feel when you're 2 inches off the ground

After seeing how much work and time goes into these cars, I don't think theres anyway we could do it without an engineering school.

It's also very expensive. Not to mention you need a complete machine shop. Just about every single part on these cars is designed and built in house. Here at VT there is say the engine team. Each member is in charge of one particular part. My roomate is in charge of the oil system. Designing and building the oil system is his senior design project. You guys have no idea how much work goes into these. Pretty much every part goes through FEA. Alot of guys spend over 40 hours a week in the shop, every single week.

No, about 6 of us built a Hovercraft.

FYI Everyone...JMU is participating in TWO SAE events. The Mini Baja project and the Supermilage race. After these we will attempt the Formula SAE...but it will take at least 4 years (my guess) until we can work on that area of SAE. I am part of the JMU chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers. Naturally, money is a major factor in us not tackling that challenge yet. We do need fabricators and engineers too if anyone is interested in helping out.

By the way, every friday they have something here called friday beers. Basically at 5 on friday all the grad students and professors meet and in one of the lounge areas and get free beer and pizza... It's great if your an alcoholic at heart and have to pretend to do work and be responsible for an entire week.
