why IRS? everything i've read says it cannot be made to handle better than the stick on the mustang.

While this has been the general consence for several years now an IRS placed 2nd at Nationals in a fox body, so maybe there is something to it, only time will tell...

To answer others questions the mustang (GT) since 79 came w/ an 8.8 as did cobras until 99 which started the IRS, then there were 4 production versions of the IRS 99/00R/01/04. The 04 was the better one, which is the one I have.

I believe the bottom of the spring sits on the donut-shaped indentation in front of the axle.

Is that a one-piece aluminum control arm? That single item looks sooo expensive.

Yeah. I've seen that on Spike's Truckin'. Why is the spring separate from the shock? Where'd you source it from and are your Mustangs breeding with one another?

The 4th mustang, the one in the garage on the lift is the guy's 04 cobra that we were pulling the IRS out of last night and putting in that solid axle. The roof you see is the mazda 6. I probably did hit my head, b/c I've pooped the IRS ever since it came out. As stated below the spring sits in that dohnut shpaed area of the control arm and there's a matching pearch on the unibody. All rubber bushings get replaced w/ alunimun for racing in American Iron .

No mustang until the 05's came with coilovers. The spring was alwas seperate from the shock. On my 00GT I switched them all to coilovers and tubular control arms. I got the IRS from a guy w/ an 04 Cobra, he wanted the 8.8 rear for drag racing. It had built axles and a spool.

On domestic cars, typically the spring/shock combo we all are common with is not how they do it. Some VDUBS have that suspension setup too.

In the rear, it's very common. E30's, S12's, ford focus, heck, 944's don't even have rear springs, just a torsion bar.

I think it is capable of carrying more load. The coil over type setups are not able to haul around as much weight. Also it is more complicated then the hard axel setup (obviously) All FWD Chrysler that has a K-base (Kcar, Dynasty, Daytona, Lancer, Shadow, Caravan, etc.) have a separate shock and spring on the rear. For the cars it is a coil for the vans it is a leaf. On L-bodys, which are a Chrysler of Europe creation (Omni, Charger, 024, Turismo, etc.) they have OEM coilovers all around.

Inboard Spring,
Advantage: Cheaper to produce
Disadvantage: Everything

Spring on Shock combo (coilover) is superior to an inboard spring for just about anything. There might be some weird off road thing that benifits w/ an inboard shock but I can't think of why.
