I joke about it all the time, especially since Fairfax County traffic sucks so bad but now there's proof.

D.C. Suburbs Top List Of Richest Counties

Rapidly growing Loudoun County has emerged as the wealthiest jurisdiction in the nation, with its households last year having a median income of more than $98,000. It is followed by Fairfax and Howard counties, with Montgomery County not far behind.

wealthiest doesn't mean much... as far as quality of living goes, it's far below fairfax and arlington IMO.

Of course it does. More money = better life... duh. Since when do more affluent areas have a better quality of life? Silly me. I do enjoy your traffic though.

I really don't understand what's so bad about Loudoun. You don't really party in DC any more so what's so great about Arlington or Fairfax? What does Fairfax have going for it other than proximity to DC? Nothing. I spent 20 years in Ffx and can tell you it really isn't that great and it's definitely not what it used to be.

People have a stigma about Loudoun that it's too far, is the sticks and full of crusty old folks that's just not true any more. I'd ask any of you to name 5 things that's better about Fairfax as compared to eastern Loudoun County. Here's a hint, more traffic and more expensive housing don't count as pluses.

Evan Wrote:you couldnt pay me to live in loudon

I call BS. You mean to tell me that if someone gave you a stipend you wouldn't live 15 minutes farther west? That's just plain dumb. What exactly are you getting out of where you live?

You know, Chris, just because you like it in Loudon doesn't mean that everybody else will. Aside from the fact that your tastes are so incredibly different from most of the folks you're talking to, it's entirely possible, likely even, that your value system is light years separated from theirs. Why does everybody have to like it? The fact that it's "rich" isn't a good reason, and you can't go imposing your values on somebody else, expecing them to enjoy the ride.

Also, look at the statistic. A household median income of $98,000 or greater. That really isn't very impressive at all. There are certain parts of Arlington and Fairfax that are so stratospherically high that 98K (which, by the way, if you want to divide it evenly is 49K per earner in a 2 earner home... again, not impressive at all). is downright laughable. Consider the fact that a county wide income level only gives you an idea of the demographic from one border to another - you can safely expect that your county will be similar all over. Arlington and Fairfax both have huge-earner areas, and they both have areas that I wouldn't want to live in at all.... but so what?

I lived in North Arlington for 8 years. The generic North Arlington family is pretty well off - I'd venture a guess that it would be greater than 98K a year/house pretty easily. But the North Arlington statistic is skewed by the poorer South Arlington areas. Again - so what? I never went to South Arlinton for much of anything. Looking at a statistic like, surprise surprise, was thrown around like candy in a giant, worthless newspaper, is just fodder to make you feel good. If you want to say your rich community is a virtually-imaged line on the map, go right ahead... but I think it's silly into fooling yourself into thinking that you're somehow better off.

I've got no interest in Loudon at all. So sue me. I know that what I get utility out of is so vastly different than what you do that I think it's great you've got your cake over there.... but it sure as hell ain't mine.

All I asked is why other areas are better and why Loudoun was so bad... I'm not trying to brainwash people. You missed the sarcastic tone of the thread or you're just not up to speed on the "live in Loudoun" ongoing joke. Either way, lighten up... you'll prolly live longer.

I'm guilty of the former, I missed the sarcasm.

I don't like it, though, because of the extra 15 minutes. For me, 15 minutes is piled on top of another 15 minutes that I got from moving to Clifton. Nobody lives out there.. *tear* I'd be all lonely.

The people who commute from Loudoun (or WV for that matter) to DC are crazy. I can admit that it's not worthwhile for this that work inside the beltway to live out here, especially since a commute longer than 45 minutes is simply not an option in my book. That said, if you don't work or party in DC I don't understand why Loudoun is so bad.

why do i dislike loudoun? hrm... there is nothing to do... i can't ride my bike in to dc... i can't get dinner w/ caitlin and just cruise around the monuments with the top down afterwards... i'm far from the metro... you can't easily go to a nats game after work... i can't run for 30 seconds and be on an awesome running trail that will take me to the potomac.

if you don't like being outside and doing things, i suppose loudoun works.

on a somewhat related note, i made this last night:

LOL.... that's a new one. Usually people say Loudoun is too rural, not that it's for hermits. Nothing to do outside? W&OD? Regional Parks? Potomac River? More golf courses than you can shake a stick at? Two paintball courses? Less than an hour from Summit Point? Didn't you get your scuba cert in Loudoun? Nothing to do is a misconception.

You're right about the monuments but there are plenty of awesome drives with plenty of regional landmarks in Loudoun County. You ever wonder why most "rides" end up out this way?

Oh and we (we being my family) have Caps season tickets and it takes us a half hour to get downtown after work. Another 15 minutes and we're in Chinatown eating dinner. It would take at least that from Vienna metro.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to live out here 'cause obviously you like where you're at... it's the perception people have that's interesting. I used to think the same thing before I moved here.

Great graph Mikey, now we should see how the recent fall in the housing market has affected housing cost.

My friend lives in Dale City and there is a new development near him and there are 700,000-800,000 houses for sale, they can't sell them, like 8 to 10 houses. The area is vacant with these beautiful ass houses on 1 and 1/2 acre lots.

regional landmarks? i'm not big on seeing fields where civil war battles took place Tongue the reason most rides end up out there is because you're closer to where nobody lives.

no you're not... unless you have a private helicopter.
