Quote:RotaryNews.com has confirmed that there will be a recall on the 2004, 2005 and some 2006 Mazda RX-8s. Not every RX-8 will need a new engine, only those that fail a series of tests, including a new vacuum test. The replacement engines will correct for issues ranging from flooding, hard starting, complete loss of compression, and use of Synthetic Oil in hot climates. For those that do not require an engine replacement, the ECU will be reflashed to provide for more lubrication (an already released Flash). Recall notice letters will be sent out to owners on a staggered schedule. At this point some dealers do not know about the recall, as the bulletin has not been sent.
Jeremy Barnes from Mazda Public Relations stated: "We will not walk away from any Mazda owner." Jeremy also pointed out that other issues that have escaped on the Internet as of late were only part of the story. He hopes the recall action by Mazda will show owners that Mazda is doing the right thing after all.
We at RotaryNews say, if you own an RX-8, check over this list of TSB's (Click Here). If your car is experiencing any of the issues listed on that page, print out the ones that apply to you, and bring them down to the service department while they check your car for the other recalls. We, at RotaryNews also say: "if in doubt, do NOT use Synthetic Oil." For those of you that are "Rotary Gods" (!) and know what you are doing, it is OK, other wise stay away from synth, and use the good old Dyno Juice.

Didn't the Renesis win engine of the year a few years back? I love it
Two feet.
I talked to a few RX8 owners this past weekend, they said it has mostly to do with people not really getting on them and revving them high, the cars that will fail are the ones used in stop/go traffic or never see the upper RPM's.

I don't think too many people will be able to differentiate a good design from a bad production process. That's a shame... there's nothing inherently wrong with rotary engines, especially not with the Renesis, but people will see this and think about how bad that kind of motor is by implication.
When it comes to Ryan Jenkins, the story ends with me putting him in the wall.

oops
LOL!! One of THE biggest myths in the book for rotary engines is not to use synthetic oil. I guess people just don't do there homework anymore...This was discussed in detail wayyyy back in the early 80's when the Rx-7 got introduced to the states. Just goes to show you how much people still don't know about rotary engines.

Uh, with most normal cars, isn't it the more you beat on them the more likely they are to break down?
It's kind of a paradox to me that the slower you drive that car, the worse off you are... LOL!

You have to make sure the engine is nice and warmed up, but winding out an engine increases combustion temps which helps de-sludge an engine and also burn of hydrocarbons, and on a piston car it seats the rings.

I went over this in my Rotary Presentation, which you weren't there for. Rotaries, by design, burn oil. They have special injectors to drip oil onto the rotor to lubricate it. Synthetic doesn't burn nearly as well, and can gum up the internal werkin's of the wankel.
So it's dinosaurs for the RX- X.

Can't you disable the MOP and run 2 cycle oil in your gas to lube the rotors/seals?

Yeah, but A: What manufacturer is going to put THAT in the owners manual, B: I'm sure it would void the warranty, and C: I'm not sure it's street legal.
But yeah, I think Jack had talked about doing that to the TII.

Dr. Wankel was German. If the rotary were a french design, it would spit out bread and smelly cheese when it surrendered, instead of apex seals.
