.RJ Wrote:Well, to what extent does it matter if you are not making dvd-quality video? Evan Wrote:MPEG2 unfortunately. Lower quality and larger video files.
I looked up the specs on the site and the resoultion and fps is the same (720x480@30fps) but they only get 25-30 min of recording out of a 1GB CF card. And using MPEG2 for the compression, the quality is most likely lower (more artifacts, blurry) but I cant say for sure without seeing video and comparing. Best case scenario is that its about the same quality, you just need bigger flash cards.
A bonus of the MPEG2 format is you can directly author a dvd without any video conversions.

are you agreeing with me? if not, i was referring to a plain-jane camera sending an a/v signal to a solid state recorder, nothing tape related.

The ZR60 doesn't exist anymore, it was probably renamed to the cooler sounding ZR600 you see there. No need to get snappy
Are the "Hi8" camcorders the one that don't use tape? Chad, could it of been a Sony Handycam that you used? Thats their entry level camcorder, i've also been looking at those...anyone have any experience w/ them?

Hi8 is tape.
All (cheap) camcorders use either tape or MiniDVD's.

Hi8 use larger tapes than miniDV and are lower quality analog. If you're looking for a "budget" format you shouldn't be considering anything less than D8. It's like Hi8, only digital.

Hi8 is a tape, just an old analog tape, basically a small version of VHS.

lol just messin w/ you....well I just got back from shopping around a little and played with both the Canon XR series and the Sony Handycam series and they seem nearly identical, features, pricewise etc. The Canons have image stabilization, so i'll probably go w/ one of those because thats definately a useful feature for what i'll be using it for

I bought a ZR70 for track abuse for a 100 bucks off ebay. Then my car broke.
Two feet.
You should take the stickers off... they're only good for an additional 50 lines of resolution but their weight makes them a burden.
