Well guys, it's alive!

It took some encouragement, but not much. Fresh battery, fuel (it was on empty) and it wouldn't start. Checked for spark on each cylindar and had spark. Cleaned the plugs, reinstalled, and tried again. After a little coughing and sputting it took off.

It hesitates a little sometimes and quite a bit others at various RPM's. At full throttle it behaves better and it pulls nicely most of the time but one can still detect some hesitation. I'm going to do a compression test on it tomorrow for good measure and I'm also going to replace the plugs. 218000 miles :-). I'm also going to do some other things like replace the O2 sensor and whatever else I find on the various BMW checklists on the internet.

The car needs some serious TLC. A UVA gal owned it and was pretty clueless about car care. Nor did she ever wash it. However, pending the compression test I think we have a winner. I'll keep you guys updated! If you have any knowledge on random hesitation on an M50 and/or E36 please let me know!

bahaha nice buy man! Test out the coils, regular maintanence, get some of that MAF cleaner, fuel system cleaner, it might all come back.

pete, get some good valve cleaner in there and rev that sucka like it was meant to be, clean the MAF and all the other stuff you already know.

Why not just use a bottle of STP complete fuel system cleaner to clean the injectors and valves. For some reason it doesnt seem like a good idea to suck stuff through my intake that is advertised as working well when ingested, mixed with oil and when put in the gas tank Idea .

That isnt going to clean the gunk out of the throttle body/intake manifold....

The stuff works, and makes a great smoke show for the neighbors Smile I like the B-12 in a can (avail at autozone) but seafoam works good too.

Seafoam is some good shit. Water mist also works well to steam clean the valves and is even cheaper.

RJ what is B-12? Is that the BG stuff?

Does Seafoam 'expire'? I've got a can I've been thinking about using.

What about carb cleaner (not the spray, the liquid)?

so do seafoam users just disconnect the vacuum tube that usually goes to the valve cover and put it in a cup full of seafoam to clean out the TB and intake mani/valves? i've heard that its effective just putting it in the gas tank and also putting it in with oil. i'm not sure if all are correct, so someone help me out

If you were trying to clean the intake manifold and valves, why would you suck it into the valve cover? Never mind that the valve cover usually vents out of the engine, not into Wink

The vacuum line to the brake booster is a pretty good place to suck the seafoam/b12/etc in through.... goes right into the manifold, usually plenty of hose to work with.

no no no, disconnect it from the valve cover. the hose that runs from the valve cover to the intake tube and sucks out of the valve cover into the intake tube.

Since its behind the TB you may not get enough vacuum for it to work, but its worth a shot.
