I was just thinking, if we were to do an official MM trip (2006/2007) to some race or event, what would you want it to be?
Even if someone else posts up your idea, post it again so we can compare.
I'll begin:
12 Hours of Sebring (American Le Mans)
24 Hours of Daytona (Grand Am)
Formula 1 at Montreal
Baja 1000
Moto GP at Laguna Seca
People here have already been to Sebring, Daytona, and Moto GP at Laguna Seca (going again next month) but we could still make an official trip since all of them were a ton of fun.

Moto GP at Laguna Seca In a word. YES
GrandAm race at VIR. Close enough to get a large group, minimal time involved, small amount of $$ involved and a familiar place for a number of people. Large diversity of cars racing at a place many of us have/will race at as well.
Personally, I won't travel far, nor spend a lot of money/time to go 'watch' a race. I'd rather spend it actually doing it.
well i've got a good amount of vacation time ... now i just need money.

Other ideas:
24 hr of Le Mans
24 hr of Nurburgring
Moto GP somewhere in Europe (Mugello!)
Isle of Mann TT

Yeah the Grand Am Cup 12 hour at VIR should be really cool, we should definitely get a good group together to go watch that.
I'd definitely like to watch some racing in Europe and add a few runs at Nurburgring in there somewhere.

Hit me up if you go to Europe, i'll be in France over the breaks. I'm going to try and convince my dad to rent an S2K or something and take it to the ring, atleast to spectate. A group MM drive in Europe would be amazing, the roads are spectacular. Just don't screw up and get in trouble with the law, cause its his job to save your ass
If Europe, how about an MM Ferrari F430 group buy? about 3-4K Euros for a weekend from Paris, that would be badass. Take turns lapping it at Spa or something. Just don't mention that to the rental agent!
Other ideas, those were some great suggestions. I thought maybe we could rent a short bus and take a trip to a racing event, maybe Sebring in Florida or something.
Europe might be a little optimistic for a large group considering the extreme variance of free time, vacation time, and budget of alumni as well as the current students.
Personally, I'm with Chad. I'm not really into going a long ass way in order to see a race. Trackdays is already too large of an expense for me to logically justify.
Though I will have to say that if you guys choose F1 in Montreal, I might have to cave. I love that city, the bars are awesome, the beer is delicious and the strippers allow you to touch them.
Two feet.
its hard enough to get a whole bunch of MMers to do anything let alone get on a plane somewhere. VIR is probably the furthest a big group would go. although i think a beach trip to daytona would be pretty sweet as well

2004 Honda S2000
2007 BMW X3
i say Isle of man or some MotoGP in europe.
i can't wait for this Laguan MotoGP.
aslo AMA is coming down to VIR soon, that would be easy to gather for. and AMA always has fun stuff going on

Just don't mention that to the rental agent! This is actually an excellent idea. We could put money together and rent an exotic on a trip somewhere. I wouldn't want to get into something like a F430 though because
A. Ferraris break
B. Car might be a lot more than some people can handle, even with TC
But maybe we could rent something like a Cayman S ($450/day in LA), Elise ($400/day) or something during a trip and do some open track or just drive around the country side. I actually had a reservation for a S2000 in LA when we went to JGTC but some stupid ass burnt out the clutch before I was able to pick it up .

Well there are 6 of us flying out to Laguna I think we can do something big if we plan it with enough lead time and people really want to do it. We can even do fundraisers to make it free or heavily reduced cost. Of course Europe is a huge stretch so that might be a no go but I think we could swing Montreal, Laguna, or even something in Mexico. Maeng I like your idea for a beach trip for 24 hours of Daytona.
I was thinking about going to the X-Games this year since they're going to have rallying and supermoto this year but my budget is already stretched with Laguna and our Japan trip.

I would say northern Italy in general just to see everything they have there. Sometimes coordinating a race is hard, because people are obliged to friends/family/girlfriends/fiances/wives during the spring/summer so something in the winter time would suit me better but there are no races or anything then, but it wouldn't necessarily make a trip no enjoyable.

how about a rally event? Say WRC Mexico, or any of the Rally America or NASA events on the east coast....
I was actually thinking Rally Mexico when I started the post but I didn't post it because I haven't been following WRC in the last few years. I'm hoping its gonna get a lot better in the next couple of years now that costs are being cut and 'hypothetically' it should make it a more attractive option to manufacturers who would like to race their production cars on the world stage and don't make anything suitable for Le Mans.

Sorry, MM isn't providing transportation for you to goto Italy

Summertime is the best time to go because students can't take off from school in the wintertime and there are precious few events to go to at that time of year.
The only winter events I can think of are the 25 Hours of Thunderhill in December and the Monte Carlo rally but the 25 Hour is usually close to finals and Monte Carlo is gonna be stupid expensive.

Id do something in CA or Japan or europe. Something at VIR is boring since its not anything new.
Id love to go to motoGP this year with you guys, but the timing of it just sucks with the nasa races in july

I don't think that was my point at all. I guess what I am getting at is the fact that with the job I have currently I only get 5 days of vacation a year, that will start over in October, but I hope to be long gone come review time, so yeah.

i can understand Feersty's feeling though. sometimes you have different priorities. I'd love to go to japan or europe for a true motorsports event. it'll take a lot of cooperation and commitment.
i think VIR for everyone who didn't want to spend a lot and couldn't take off a lot of time and possibly another trip to a really big event (motoGP in CA, F1 in Montreal, and 24 hours at Daytona really interest me!)
after this year i'm not taking a big car related trip for a while... vir or MAYBE montreal is all i'd do.
