It's all a judgement call, some people use good judgement when making that call some don't.
IMHO people don't treat bikes with the same respect that they do cars whether it be while on the road or when they're parked. I've seen countless people hop on parked bikes that weren't theres just because the mood struck them. As was said previously people see a nice car whether it be a convertible or unlocked they aren't going to do the same. Because of that most bikers want to keep their bikes within plain sight.
In the case of Front Page to use a specific instance, the parking is for the most part no-where in plain sight of the restaurant. The side walk there is huge so parking a few bikes in a line against the building really isn't in the way too much. People can still travel 4 or 5 wide along the side walk and not get too close to the road or the bikes.
Are we entitled to that, nope, are we gonna take it if it's available to us and it's not causing too much chaos, of course.
That being said, after today (crosses fingers) I won't be afraid to park my bike just about anywhere, the disc lock + the scorpio alarm will keep anyone from fucking with it.

i had to do it before and i'll do it again if i need to. I was overheating on my bike, my battery was dying (had to shut it down due to heat and then clutch start it on 495 traffic), and i'll be damned if i'm going to be stranded on 495 in traffic in swealtering heat. You do what you need to do though and it was, IMO, and emergency situation so i used the shoulder to get to the nearest exit.
i wouldn't call it relatively safe though mainly because of the excess debris and the fact that people driving "know" that it's not being used unless for emergency so they'll assume that no one will be occupying that lane (much less a small motorcycle that isn't always clearly visible).
I'm also an individual that believes that motorcycles should be allowed to lane-split in traffic, but that's just me.

Well that would result in a ticket wouldn't it? Kinda like going 15 over the speed limit. Going 15 over isn't necessarily dangerous but nonetheless you'll get a reckless for it. Same with riding on the shoulder.
If I'm right next to my exit and I would only have to ride on the outside for 50 yards in a place where I'm not gonna get hit or something you're damned right I'll ride on the shoulder.
To be honest I wish lane-splitting were legal in VA. Its legal in CA and in a lot of other countries where there are a lot more motorcycles and a lot bigger traffic problems. Ironically enough, the way the law reads it would be legal for a scooter to lane split...

I was talking about shoulder use in a car... but I suppose the example works just as well on a bike. As far as BJs are concerned... just ask Andrew's sister.

i think it's more acceptable on a bike (again) due to size. My main concern about people using the shoulder is if they were to break down or get into an accident or create another backed-up traffic lane as to not allow an emergency vehicle to pass safely. With a bike you can squeeze it inbetween cars or on the side if necessary to allow for a safe passage. With a car you cannot do this, there just simply not enough room grated everything else remain constant. Therefore i see it much worse if a car does this than a bike and it's again due to the relative sizes for each.

it's designed for both i guess, but i would consider an emergency vehicle getting to its destination much more important than one that is broken down unless the passengers of that vehicle need medical assistance, thus making the shoulder designed "more" for the emergency vehicle
