honda problem

my roomate has a '96 civic dx

i'm going to look at the car tonight, but here are the symptoms:

He hears a thud or knocking noise when he brakes and it's correlated to the speed he's traveling. It only happens when he's braking and he does not feel anything in the pedal or the steering wheel. He doesn't think it effects his driving or braking but it's getting louder as the weeks go on. The noise also appears to be coming from the rear driver's side.

I'm not really quite sure how to diagnose this, but i just wanted some possibilities before i check it out this evening.

Bushings, loose suspension bolts, worn out wheel bearing/hub - sure its coming from the rear?

that's what he said, but i'll hear it tonight and ask more about it

at first i thought it was coming from the front (very soft - could barely hear it), but then i talked with him last night and he said it's definitely coming from the rear.

yes. Wheel bearing would make a snapping/banging noise. Is it drums on the rear or disc? If it is discs the caliper mound bolts might be loose. The wheel bearing would make noise all the time so I wouls say is is a caliper bolt or one of those do-hicky-majiggers inside the drum break that holds the shoe in place.

he has drums. I know nothing of drum brakes, but it does only happen when he brakes and it's definitely coming from the driver's side rear.

he's going to take it to a shop that's local to his parents place in MD to get it repaired.

when my wrx wheel bearings first started to go, they made a pop noise every time i tapped the brakes. Then after a couple months they started making the constant grinding.

although if this is a *thud* and not a pop or clink, i really dont know what it is.

is there an axle nut in the rear?

i was thinking it had something to do with a loose item inside the rear drums.

There's a 32mm spindle nut in the rear, just like in the front.

all i saw was a flat round object where the nut would be, is it behind that?

I doubt a loose spindle nut is the problem though.

Changing the hub is easy though, remove spindle nut, remove hub, put new hub on with new spindle nut, stake it down and put the brake drum back on.
