I believe Yamaha pulled out of superbike after the Buell FX Fiasco.

No no, Yamaha has not been in AMA Superbike for many years now. Supposedly they'll return to Superbike in 07.

Yamaha is however contesting Formula Xtreme this year, which for all intents and purposes is the 600 cc version of Superbike. FX is the class that will be doing the 200 mile race at Daytona on Saturday.

Found this rather amusing -

If I were American Honda I would take the RC51 superbikes out of mothballs, drain the water out of the engines, and fill it back up with engine oil. Use the cylinder blocks as oil reservoirs like Buell uses the swingarms as oil reservoirs. Change the name of the radiator to oil cooler. Issue a press release and say that it is an air/oil cooled engine. And for good measure, I would then call HRC and commission an engine kit to bump the displacement from 1000cc to 1340cc.

If I were Yamaha I would probably boycott the class.

So who votes that the Buells get smoked this weekend? 200 miles is a long way to go on an engine that is as stressed as an FX bike's. Of course having like twice the displacement of the rest of the field may help.

The Buells might be able to swing a top ten but they're not going to be fighting for the top 5 unless people at the front crash or break. Same thing with the winner, unless Disalvo crashes, breaks, or does something stupid during his pit stops he is going to win.

That Harley engine'll hold up; I wouldn't doubt that much. Reliability is somethng the motor has going for it, especially in the Ford GT fashion that it isn't revving to the moon to make power. As for it being competitive... yeah, right.

Everybody crying displacement foul needs to remember that there are well documented allowances for technically inferior motors throughout motorcycle racing and:

a) the bike is [for the most part] air cooled

b)it's a ROTARY twin [has only one crankpin] and has physical airflow limitations that inline fours do not

There are two big problems with the XBRR. It's air/OIL cooled which, if you ask me, isn't a big issue; and that there's no street version, which is the major problem at hand. In both the spirit and rules of Fomula Xtreme the goal has been for manufacturers and racers to showcase hardware that ordinary folks can ride home from the local dealership... you can't ride an XBRR home. In fact, you can't ride it on the street at all... sure, it's a derivative of a street bike, but that's not the idea - derivatives are for race teams to make, not factories to produce. The bike isn't in the spirit of the rules and the uproar it's caused in the AMA has shown that the majority of the racing community feels the same (read the link RJ posted above for a taste of how people feel about it [ironically Superbike Planet.com is the same news agency that posted an article a few weeks ago asking where all the clever cheating went in motorcycle racing....])

Either way, I think Gerlad said it best: "The 200 is Yamaha's race to lose."

Well they're not using HRC bikes and I guess they haven't got their program developed as well as Ten Kate in WSBK. They look a lot better now than they did last year, but being over a second off the leader is not good =/
