This person made a Google Earth reference to all the racetracks in North America. Very cool indeed, check it out:

Of course, you have to have google earth downloaded before you download the additional references....

wish i hadn't un-installed Google Earth now. i had one bookmark link that toured all of the F1 tracks and also had the Ferrari Test Track. Google Earth can be a real time waster for sure.

I use it for work it is a great tool when aerial photographs are taken of the site you want to view. But when a random up and coming development in Culpeper County is blurry, it provides me no assistance.

why would you be looking at a random up and coming development in culpeper county?

I found that virtualearth.msn.com is pretty neat as well. It has the same coverage as googl earth (read: wont be any better in rural areas), the controls are pretty bad and its slow. The one thing it has over google, which i think is preetty big is that it has a "bird eye view" which takes around 40 feet off the ground, but at 3/4 view. It is much, much more useful for looking at real estate. seeing the footprint of a building is not very helpful.

he shouldn't be relying on satellite photos that may be years old then.

If current, up to date photography is required they'd pay for satellite images or send his ass down there with a camera.

what are you talking about? I thought this was about the quality of sat images in various mapping tools...
(FWIW, I don't have google maps here at work, so it will have to wait until I get home)
Oh yeah, duh, how could I mistake what I meant for what I meant!

I do have to look at historical aerial photographs though and they can be found at the respective county offices. The most current photographs they have in house are often times a few years old, so I rely upon my site inspection to gather information on the current state of the site. I use Google Earth primarily to find longitude and latitude and draw site plan maps. I bring the image into Design CAD and trace over it using the company template.

I do go down there with a camera. Take pictures of tanks, adjacent properties, heating elements, and intermittent streams. I also make sure ricers are negligent when it comes to used oil disposal

Wow, I just checked this out yesterday, just found out they have a Mac version now. Sweet! This racetracks thing doesn't seem to be working, but I found quite a few of them myself. Pretty interesting, especially trying to figure out how old photos are. I think I'll keep my eye on a few and see when/if they ever update.
Barber (a few years old at least, the track is there, but building is under construction... I think I see the ant sculptures too!)

The Nurburgring is all there too, with enough detail to even see the line on some portions, most excellent!
The maps of Iraq are pretty detailed.... maybe we can help send some bombs.

Wasn't it that movie Toys where Robin William's toy factory gets taken over by a military corporation that made simulators for kids that were in fact controling drones in combat. Now that would be cool.

yeah, I don't see why there can't be a little icon to click right next to marking a point. Heck, the little mark looks like a target anyway! Maybe every friday they could pick the "winner" for the week.
