Emissions problems? Hburg city registration demystified!
#1
Just did this while I was down there over the past week thanks to some advice on the board here. Just like I anticipated, they didn't care at all exactly where it was I claimed I lived down there. All they want is tax revenue. I gave them an old address and had them ship the bills up to my NoVA address. Who needs emissions anyway?!?

The building is the big grey one on the left right after the Sherwin-Williams paint store on Main St. heading out towards Dave's from campus. $20 bucks and an hour and a half drive is all you need for no more emissions worries!

I was thinking that, but I have my car insured through my mom so I dont think I can register it down here when she lives in NOVA. Or can you? I dont know, would save me a crap load, and I bet safety is pretty lenient down here.

I just finished doing this, and yes you can. You can still have it registered in someone elses name, just request to change the vehicle address and tell them you want to get a county sticker wherever the vehicle address is.

The most localist comment i have ever heard. for inspection you still have to pass the same safety requirements everywhere in VA, mostly around the metropolitan/congestesed areas will you see the emissions tests

yeah this is true. if my car can pass "emissions" around here, pretty much anything thing can. i was just pissed that the panthers were getting the crap beat out of them so badly.

Well, that's exactly why I registered it down there. My WRX will probably pass emissions no problem, especially since it's pretty much an CEL check and a visual. There is no way on God's Green Earth the STI will pass though. It is a polluting, flame shooting, acid-rain creating, Earth-blackening monster. You should see the foul shit that I catch in the ghetto catch can!

All OBD II cars in Va are a CEL check - if its got no stored codes and enough run cycles, it passes.

not in nova. At one point they tried just checking codes, but not anymore.

crap, is that how it is in Atl. too? as in, i can't clear a stupid secondary O2 sensor CEL right outside the emmsions booth, and hope the code doesn't come on again til later? and by run cycles, does that mean prolonged driving or just turn on/turn off?

You have to drive under various conditions for a certain amount of time (ex highway driving, stop and go, etc.) to set the readiness codes. This means that you cant clear the O2 code right outside the station - I learned this the hard way Sad . BTW - even if the CEL is off with an O2 code like that, the code is most likely still stored in the computer and you will fail the test.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

When did this change?

I'll ask my dad and see what he says (he's a dealership tech).
