so my 6 pt harnesses are almost installed in the miata. i was going to put the bolts for the sub harness (points 5 and 6) where the seat attaches to the body, but that bolt is too short for the tab and seat bracket. my question is, can i just wrap the harness around the front of the seat bracket since its main purpose is basically to hold the center of the harnesses around your pelvis?

Why not just get longer bolts?

eh, i've had a lot of problems with the bolts that hold the seat bracket on. the less i take the seat out, the better. also, finding bolts of the right size and thread pitch in this town is easier said than done. lowes and local hardware stores have laughable selections of metric bolts, and the automotive parts stores all carry bizzare bolts that i would never need

Specialty Fasteners might have something. But then again, I wouldn't want to be a skinny Asian kid walking in there

Mount your belts the RIGHT way the FIRST time. Don't wrap your belts!

lets open a can of worms here... whats wrong with wrapping belts? if the fastener is on them, it would spread out any tension on the belt along the contact surface of a bar as opposed to that little clip. i dont see how thats worse but i'm no expert. perhaps i'm not thinking of something obvious here?

well, I'm not 100% sure how you are going to attach the sub belt by 'wrapping' it around the seat bracket, also, I don't know where that bracket is, now, if these are 6pt belts the 'proper' way to mount them is to use the same bolts that you used to mount lap belts. I'm guessing you are using that pro solo seat which don't really allow this very easily. so, you need to mount the sub belts in line with those bolts, this come up being the rear seat bolt mounts.
Is the seat bar that you want to wrap it around smooth (belt won't get cut when stretched)? How are you going to attach it?
Brian, dont wrap the belts.
Those seat mounts are colossal pieces of shit - do what you have to to make it fit correctly and be able to get it in/out of the car easily - this will likely involve enlarging one or 2 of the mount holes and chasing all the thread holes in the chassis with a tap.
Anyways, once the seat is out again mount them the same way you would mount a lap belt - my sub belts have 'bolt in' ends while the lap belts have 'snap in' ends - doesnt matter either way. Also pay attention to the way you are supposed to loop the sub belts to the ends, it is not the same as the lap belts.

no way no way no way.
That seat bracket is flat steel, which would place all stress in an impact on a very small portion of the sub belt causing it to break.
if you dont feel comfortable doing it right, then pay someone to do it right.
its not that i dont feel comfortable doing it right, i just wanted to get some other opinions on it. i will probably end up using the stock seat belt holes for one side, and drill into the trans tunnel and put an eye bolt in there with a backing plate for the other side.
i can get in and out of the car as well as anyone can with a sparco seat in a miata (which isnt easy, but is certainly doable). i dont intend to use the harnesses on the street, and getting out of the harnesses is no problem with the center cam lock. getting in might take a bit of time, but thats not nearly as important as G(ing)TFO.

For the sub belts????

If you need a hand setting up the belts right, bring it on up here.

drill into the floor pan for the sub belt, a few inches in front of where the lap belts mount (but closer to the center)
you really shouldnt have the lap and the sub belt mounted to the same mounting point
Maeng, are you planning to use arm restraints as well?

i didnt plan on it because i figured i'd have a hard top by now, but since i dont, i guess it wouldnt be a bad idea.
as for the sub belts, i was under the impression that these basically hold the lap belts over your pelvis and take much less stress should the unfortunate occur.

Yes, but improper mounting prevents this from happening - belts stretch ALOT if you hit something, up to 10-15% of their length.

got some longer bolts from specialty fasteners... wow, its like a warehouse in there with only nuts and bolts and washers.
however, i will probably end up drilling into the floor to mount these bitches to some backing plates.
